Hello! I'm looking for a new digital camera. I don't know a lot about digital photography, but I'm wanting to learn. Right now, the purpose of the camera will be personal use (basically just taking pictures/video of our family). I'd like to invest a little in some backdrops and flash equipment to take 'professional' looking photos at home. Here are the cameras I'm considering... any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Canon S2

or

Canon SX10

I have a decent budget, I just don't want to buy something I'm not going to know how to use and will be too complicated.

The G10 is a fantastic camera and worth looking at.

you should also go onto http://www.dpreview.com/ and do a side-by-side comparison of all the features. This will give you a good idea of which one has the features you are looking for. The reviews are good to... they should be able to help you understand what each one does and help you in the right track.

Camera purchasing is a tough process (for me anyway) there are so many choices! :) took me a month to decide on which dSLR I wanted :)

Hi CoopersMom! Welcome to the world of photography :D I agree with buckit purchasing camera is a tough process (enjoying process though:lol). But afterall whatever camera you choose does not make that much difference as long as your goal is to take good photos. Because you said you want to learn about photography, I recommend you consider to buy a nice budget dSLR becuase you can enjoy much more of new technique that is only provided for SLR, and not compact one. It does not have to be complicated at all anyway if choose to shoot in automatic mode.

But if it is important for you to have a camera that can be slipped in your pocket easily, its another story and compact is the only way to go.

Enjoy ;)
