I'm looking for an "L" quality lense without the high price. I want something in the 24-80 range with high optical quality for use on a 20D and Rebel. Can anyone recommend something.

Everybody wants L quality without the high price, but it doesn't exist. You do get what you pay for. There are lenses that are of very good quality for their price but they are not L quality lenses.

If you want quality at a lower price, look at primes

Actually a good way to get L quality at less than L prices is to buy on the used market. Look at the marketplace forum here and also at www.fredmiranda.com. You can usually pick up an L lens for about 10-20% less than the cheapest retail value by buying used. Just make sure to check out the seller. Make sure they have really good feedback and they have been a member of such group for a long time. People who are long time contributors on a forum have a history behind them and are usually trustworthy to do business with.

Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8. Pretty close to L quality, but nowhere near close to L price ;)

Just the fact that you can't go manual on the Tamron was enough to make me reconsider. Now im saving up for 17-40L

Hasn't been my experience. And I've sure been trying. What I see is people will pay on the used market at least what a new item can be had for, and typically 10-20% more. I just don't understand it.
Example: 70-200 F4. I paid $480 shipped after rebates. A quick check on ebay completed sales shows them going for $540-$600 shipped. If you really don't want to deal with rebates, you can buy for $572 shipped from Beach Camera with full USA warranty.
