lol sorry gotta brag a bit

Hey alls here's the headline after this game

"Bulldogs Clinch MCHA Regular Season Title with 10-1 Win over Marian

Adrian improves to 19-1-1 overall and 16-0 in the MCHA "

Pretty cool for a team only 2nd year in existance huh,, Its my local college I live 5 mins away all the top HS players from the surrounding states and 13 canadian kids on this years roster are coming too this college too play hockey here. Its a nice new 2 year old facility & our team rules! ok enough gloating lol

lets talk gear
all these shots were taking with my 40D and my three week old new 70-200L F2.8 IS
Gotta gloat about this frekin lense the AF is sooo instant just love it love it love it!

I ordered a 50D today from B&H and will have it on thursday soo I'll be testing that out this friday and sat on two more Bulldogs Hockey games wooohooo soooo you'll see some samples from that next weekend,, I needed the 50D as a primary and will use my 40D as backup/2nd camera for a upcoming wedding in March for one of my best friends..

for these pictures in Lightroom I only added some slight exposure maybe not enough maybe cause of some darkness here and a little Clarity was added too in the pics and thats it the rest is all 40D and the lense

Manual mode
iso 1000 and shutter 500
then later in the game 800 iso and 400 shutterspeed
The lighting is great in this arena

And all these shots are through the thick Scratched glass/boards :( wish I had a photo hole this night for some better clarity

Cheers
Steve :)

Adrian has a nice club. I had their games up at Northland College last weekend...

They got 99 shots on goal. It was ridonkulous.

99 shots? Thats freakin unheard of. The opposing goalie saw more rubber than a worker at a goodyear factroy. What was the score ?

I'm assuming this is Adrian College in Michigan? Its good to hear that they have that good of a team. I'm MSU alum. BTW...very nice shots. I can't wait to get my 70-200 2.8!!!

nice images,

i see some of the problems that I see in my images in urs too, tack sharp in some images, and some are a little soft...

so it's the limitation of the non pro bodies and their AF abilities.

Some nice captures, others like Aaagogo says, seem a bit soft. I'm not a fan of pics where the faces are not showing.

I find that when I shoot through the glass, I have to post process a bit more to make the colors "pop".

ditto to what some others have said about softness. I think some of it in your shutter speed. I'd keep it higher. You've certainly got the light for it.

Also, since you're new you might not know, you're waaaaay over the 8 image limit for embedded images per thread. When it forced you to make second and third posts to fit all your images in, that wasn't a glitch in the forum software. It was trying to make you adhere to the 8 image rule.

yeah I'll work on the faces I'll zoom in a bit on fri and sat with the new 50D UPS is delivering tommorow wooohoooo,, that being said in my framing while taking the pictures I have in my head about getting the body into the shot and cropping if possible the sense where they are moving. I'll zoom in more and get the panning practice on the next games though

and yeah on the PP and getting more pop while shooting through the glass.

true on the shutterspeed and the softness thanks for the tip and suggestion,
I think shooting through a huge thick not Canon Glass the hockey rink provides has alot of something too do with some of these being soft too lol

yep just wish I on was on the bench and or photographers hole for sure

And oooppps on the 8 limit yep first time posting yep I missed that posting note its probally sticky somewhere huh lol sorry won't happen with my next game

Thanks Everyone for the Tips I'll put them too use this weekend :)
C&C is alllllllways welcome

Cheers

...and keep in mind it counts the little smileys/emoticons as an image as well. That is why you could only put 6 photos in the first post.

As to the images, I agree with you that they could be a bit brighter. They are a bit dark on my monitor. Also, any image where you can't see a face should not be posted unless it is some other really dramatic moment or action (huge check etc). So the face off (last pic), the shot from behind net (shooter's face obstructed by cross bar) etc. in my opinion would be deletes for me.

Watch your crops as well and try to stick to standard crop formats and ratios (4x6, 5x7 or 8x10).

For hockey action try and capture puck carrier with head up, puck on stick, coming at you. Bonus if you can get a defender in there backchecking him or similar. I like to position myself in corner or behind and off to side of net and then shoot players as they come at me and just as they get to blueline of the attacking zone as this is where they usually make a key move. If I am in penalty box, I'll focus on goalies at each end or else D-Men as they carry the puck out of their zone and of course plays in the neutral zone.

Cheers!

Chris
