I just got my CS working with RAW images, but I have a question. When you open the file up inside your camera with images using PhotoshopCS I see what look like picture "icon" representing each image thats in the camera.I would like to see what the images are.The only way right now to see what each image is,is to open it.Is there anyway to do this?

Why aren't you copying them to your computer first. This has got to be a very slow way of doing things. To be quite honest I have never heard of anyone opening the image directly from the camera.
Keep in mind that when you have your camera attached to the computer and you are doing these operations it is generating a drain on both your battery and camera resources. I would seriously suggest that you get a card reader and download the images to your hard drive. This will also speed things up significantly.

If you are using PSCS to directly view the images while they're still in the CF card in the camera, my suggestion to you is to first download those image files to your hard drive. Photoshop should show you a thumbnail image of all your RAW images so if it isn't doing that for you, maybe it's because it doesn't like files that are coming directly from the camera. But I'm only guessing here because I've never had this happen to me, although I must admit, I've never used PSCS to access the camera directly either.

Suggestions for a card reader that reads .cr2 files from a Canon20D? I've heard some won't read these files

A raw file is nothing more than just a file as far as the card reader is concerned. They can read any file that's stored in a card, even if it's garbage. If you are going to get one, get either a firewire card reader or an USB 2.0 (not USB 1.1) card reader. Lexar and SanDisk both make card readers as do a couple of other companies.

Leo, you make the assumption that his computer will have a port for USB 2.0 or Firewire. If the computer has only ports for USB 1.1, then there is little point in trying to attach faster card readers. It will work, but you'll get only the lesser speed.

If you want to see thumbnails of RAW/CR2 images in Windows, use this little program which is an extension to the windows shell.

Someone else posted it a few weeks back, I forget who, it's quite handy. You can use IrfanView and its plugin pack as a quick CR2 viewer too.

Good point, Bob. However, why get a USB 1.1 card reader which will always be slow even if he upgrades his computer when he can get a USB 2.0 which can be faster if he does upgrades his computer (if he doesn't already have USB 2.0)? Obviously not to save a couple of bucks, I don't think.

Heck of a way to find out,but I have a Compaq that was made in 2001 and I'm afraid it only has USB 1.1 ports.I had talked to a coworker who builds computers and she yold me at least 2 of the ports should be 2.0.Well I checked all 6 and they all are the slow ones.I got a Sandisk 12in1 reader and it works with the raw files, when i open up the browser in Photoshop CS.It just works very slowly!.It reads everything including the very thin XD cards too that are in my wifes Olympus.Only way would be to put a card in for faster type2 ports and it just isn't worth it in this computer.

If you really want to speed up the process some more in Photoshop, use Explorer to copy the files from the card reader to a folder in your hard disk drive. Once you have the files copied over to the hard drive, you can use PSCS to open these files. And it'll be much quicker. :)
