Its a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II and I got it for $129.95 Canadian
https://www.thecamerastore.com/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=23145

What would u say the 1.8 does particularly well aside from the obvious.

What little things have u noticed?

I keep trying to get this lens off ebay for a bargain price but they nearly always end up going for too close to, and sometimes over, the retail price. Some internet merchants sell it for under $80 brand new, and most of the ebay auctions end up high 70's. Add in the shipping costs, and it ends up costing more for a secondhand lens. These internet bidders clearly haven't a clue.

That being said, I saw one go for $53 once, but I missed the end of the auction because I was out.

You can usually get one on fredmiranda.com or the marketplace here for about $60-65 shipped.

I think what did it for me, was that its based in Canada. Candian dollars, Canadian taxes and no customs or anything. I find it a little harder to buy stuff from the states because once your at the checkout stage of your order there isn't any conversion for different currencies and what not.

Anyone know any other canadian photography sites?

On a scale of 1-10:
1 being not that much better
10 WAY better

How much sharper are the images when compared to the kit lense? /10
How about for color? /10

Thanks in advance

Hi BEEEsH,

Just curious, but why did you buy the lens from www.thecamerastore.com (http://www.thecamerastore.com/) instead of B&H or another reputable dealer across the border? The shipping, GST and PST is likely the same either way, but you would have save about $30 Cdn buying from the States (there are NO import duties on lenses brought into Canada from the USA).

Was the shipping free?

International shipping,. even to our neighbors right across the border, can be a pain. I don't blame you at all BEEsH for buying local.

It's a great lens too :)

Check out "Henry's" in Toronto for Mail order in Canada.. they seem to be an excellent source :) I buy there pften in fact.

Congrats!

Im hoping to win this 50mm 1.8 mk1 auction... I like the metal mount. If I dont win this, I'll be headed over to the local camera store to get a Mk2, though :D

I don't have much experience ordering from B&H, but when I have the shipping was far from being a pain. I didn't really see any difference from ordering within Canada using UPS. You just have to be sure to use the right courier and select a delivery method that includes custom brokerage in the up front price.

30 bucks isn't a big saving, so BEEEsH got a great lens for a good price anyways. For me, I bought a 24-70 2.8L and saved hundreds. The more expensive the Canon lens, seems the bigger the difference. Camera bodies seem to be priced about the same in the US and Canada.

It's all fun and games untill customs decides to get involved...
I've had two horror stories now in the last year ..... (one a sale to a forum member,. Ask DocFrankenstien ;) ) The other just tryng to ship prints to my Father in Newfoundland for Christmas. In both cases the shipments have never been located,. and no funds recovered via insurance. To get the prints to my Father,. I had to do it THREE times before he got them. I've heard many many more such stories,. Laptop Batteries being "destroyed" by customs labeled as "hazardous" etc...

It's a good lens and a bargain at that. I have the 1.4 and the 1.8 but I have to confess I usually use the 1.4 more.

congrats on your lens, on the sharpness i would give it a 10 on the color, depending on the situation of course, and a 10 on the sharpness. i love using it mainly on portraits and other things as a walk around lens. it was a great purchase and a great idea to buy one. good luck.

Finally managed to get the 50/1.8 off ebay for $69, but look at these. (http://search-completed.ebay.com/EF-50mm-f-1-8-II_W0QQcatrefZC5QQfbdZ1QQfclZ3QQfisZ2QQflocZ1QQfpo sZ90291QQfromZR6QQfrppZ50QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQftrtZ1Q QftrvZ1QQpfidZ0QQsacatZQ2d1QQsacurZ0QQsadisZ200QQs argnZQ2d1QQsaslcZ0QQsaslopZ1QQsatitleZEFQ2050mmQ20 fQ2f1Q2e8Q20IIQQsofocusZbsQQsspagenameZhQ3ahQ3aadv searchQ3aUS)
What is wrong with these people?

One thing to remember is Alberta has no sales tax. I believe you only pay GST and no provincial sales tax when ordering from Alberta. Please correct me if I am wrong.

50 1.8
- slightly noisy (but 4 70 bucks...)
- sharp yes... I give it a 7/8 in this category
- colors .. I would give it a 7 in this category
- bokeh .. I would give it a 6
- usefulnes .. I would give it a 7 ..

I would love to try a 50 1.4, but will probably try to pick up either a 85 1.8, or a 24mm prime, or 35mm prime.
