It loaded for me just fine. I'm not sure (as I only dream of serious glass like that), but It might be the 600mm Canon . Also, might be a bazooka or shoulder fired missle:lol:

Something like a 400mm with a hood? Or bigger without a hood?

Clark

I think it's a 400 2.8 with a hood.

hmm i would say it looks like a 600mm Super Telephoto...

i like how he put "camo" on it... if i saw a lens that BIG pointed at me, I'd probably run towards it just to check it out :). With or without camo, a lens like that one is hard to hide.

The bokeh is horrible.

What lens was this shot with?

IanD

600 f/4IS
The 500 is tad smaller.

I have the 500 and I am not convinced that this is the same. It could be the 600.

DSMITH131

either a 500 or 600 with hood

I used to own the 500 and I think this is bigger. My guess, 600.

600mm...
Can't be the 400mm f/2.8.. as the tripod collar is all the way to the rear of this lens like it is on the 500mm and 600mm.. On the 400mm the tripod collar is slightly more forward..

Without seeing them side by side,. telling the difference between 500mm and 600mm is quite difficult as all that really distinguishes them is size,. and it's quite hard to judge with a single photo... but to my eyes,. the lens looks just "fat" enough for my gut to say 600mm. The Dude needs to get the full Wimberly if it is the 600mm  The Sidekick just don't cut it!

(oh PS,. I can see the pics now,. I think it was just fotopic at that point in time ;)

If I paid that much for a lens, methinks I'd also be paying that much for a divorce attorney...

The way it balloons from the focus ring forward, my vote is for the 400 f/2.8L

The 500mm is the only current long Canon prime with the tripod collar that far back.

That is a 600 on a Sidekick.

Yeah, why is the tripod collar so far back on such a heavy lens?

Definately not 400mm ;)

Not true,. the 600mm collar is placed exactly the same,. it is the 400mm where it is further forward..

This lens can only be the 500mm or 600mm .. and I'm inclined towards 600mm as well.
Hell,. if Tom Doesn't think it's the 500mm.. then he's probably onto something as he has a 500mm ;)

Are you sure? On Canon's site, only the 500mm has the tripod collar back on the very end of the fatter part of the lens, by the "dots".

Unless maybe the pics on Canon's site are outdated? I wouldn't be surprised.

Looks like the 500mm to me. Just going by the pic's Phil posted. The 500 seems to have the tripod collar in the right place and there is a fattening of the barrel just prior to the wide black section, which appears to be absent in the 600mm model, and that seems to occur just beyond the first section of lens camoflague :-).

Hi, this is my first post on this forum, i've been browsing for a few months now.

I may be able to help here, i believe i spoke to this chap on friday at Slimbridge wildfowl and wetlands trust. we were both set up in one of the hides ( for those that know slimbridge, Loke & Jack Death hide ) we were both using 500mm f4 lenses. I had a 1.4 converter on and he was using both 1.4 & 2x converters stacked.
The light was not good and i am new to this lens. long lens technique needs working on!

Unfortunatly i also didn't get his name. but it was a 500mm f4

Hope this solves the mystery.
Glenn

P.S. AlanB. i've enjoyed your bird pictures. did you get any of the Kingfishers?

Um i did sort of,but they were not that good.I wanted to go in that end hide, that was looking directly out to them. But there were LOADS of people in there so i could'nt get any shots there   .So i was looking out of the other one(on the side),but that made it to far away for my 400mm + 1.4x TC.

I'll pop up again in the week when its not busy :D

If you have taken any shots of those Kingfishers please can you post them up?.I'd love to see them

Oh and i regret not having a chat with that chap  ,i did'nt really want to bug him

I was,.. but I was completely freaking wrong too!!!!!!

(I take solice in knowing that both Canon Europe,.. and Belmondo, were wrong too,. and he has the 500mm !!!!!) :o :p

Canon Europe's Idea of a "600mm" (http://www.canon-europe.com/For_Home/Product_Finder/Cameras/EF_Lenses/Image_Stabilization_Lenses/EF_600mm_f4LIS_USM/index.asp?ComponentID=25816&SourcePageID=26369)

then to make matters even more hilarious,. note in the lower left hand corner,. the "fine print"

This is a EF Lens 400mm 2.8L IS USM Which it isn't that either!!!!!!

It's gotta be a 600mm with a hood. That thing is so huge. Looks like it's going to break off from the camera or something!
