When I use my Extreme III 30mb/s 8 gb CF card the shot counter does not work. With my other cards it works fine. Any thoughts?????

What, you mean it's stuck at "999"? If that's the case it's because that's the highest number the "frames remaining" counter will display. Once you get below 999 estimated shots left it'll start counting down normally. To put your mind at ease, set the camera to RAW + Large Fine JPEG and ISO 1600 and watch the number drop.

OK it does work then but why not when I am just shooting on Auto, 200ISO M quality????

WAIT! Just reread what you said and now I understand. It shows 999 but in reality there are more than that allowed.....

"Shots remaining", the number inside the [ ] square brackets on your LCD panel and it's an estimate based on typical file sizes for your selected image format, compression level and ISO setting. If the OP's shooting Large Fine JPEG, an 8 GB card's good for somewhere around 2400 frames. RAW only, it'll hold a bit under 1000; RAW + Large JPEG, under 700.
