View Full Version : Lost my software...

Folks, it's been a while since I wandered through here. I am in need. I have managed to lose the CD than came with my 10D, and I'm trying to upgrade to a new laptop. The old version of Breezebrowser I've been using won't vew RAW images without the Canon RAW conversion files.

The third-party sites are very coy about what Canon software is and isn't required. I KNOW that it is required for BB 2.6b, but I find no evidence in their release history over the last 18 months that they no longer require those drivers to be present.

I could do it with CS, but I prefer something that will batch-pull the embedded JPEGS out (which I use to make a quick set of proofs at Costco), and that will batch-convert from RAW.

So, what software actually does convert CRW files WITHOUT the Canon software being loaded on the computer? BB Pro? BB newer version? Bibble? An easy download from Canon (I could only find upgrade downloads from CanonUSA--no help).

You don't really need any of the Canon software, just get a card reader and use that in windows explorer. If you really want it you can download it from the canon website.

RawShooter 1.1.1 is a good, free RAW convertor.

I must not have been clear. Moving the files is not the issue--as you say, that's easy just with the OS.

Breezebrowser used to require that Zoombrowser had been installed before it would display and convert CRW files. Is that still the case with the newer versions? Is it the case with other third-party image browsers like Bibble?

I don't want Zoombrowser, which was never effective software for me, but I do want to restore my ability to view and convert raw images in a batch, as Breezebrowser does. I just want my Breezebrowser to work without the Canon software being installed first.

I could not find a place on the Canon website to download anything except upgrades. I can't run an upgrade if I don't have the thing being upgraded installed.

I don't know much about BreezeBrowser, but check out RawShooter (http://www.pixmantec.com/products/rawshooter_essentials.html), which is free and doesn't require any other software.

Thanks guys.

Long as email holds up (the download is gonna take a coupla hours over my dialup), I should be all set.

By the way, I answered some of my own questions. Bibble uses its own raw converter and doesn't need the Canon files. But it won't do batch extractions of embedded jpegs, which is a feature I like most about Breezebrowser. I use that to pull out quickie jpegs that I can burn onto a CD and take down to Costco and print for 19 cents a print. Then my wife has something to put into her albums, and I have some proofs. We don't need no stinkin' color correction or sharpening for that, heh, heh.

I have PS CS, and it has a batch viewer than I didn't even know about. Does everything Bibble does, and doesn't do what Bibble doesn't do. So, at least I can look at my raw files on my new laptop, and I can convert them to PSD's. But the only way to make that quickie set of jpegs is to converted them from raw. Can you say "slow"?

And I just downloaded a newer version of Breezebrowser (version 2.9--the newest version I can download without having to pay), which I started before I realized what was coming into my email. For those who don't like BB's raw conversion, let me just say that there's a reason I upgraded to Photoshop CS. But it will extract those embedded jpegs with no loss and without fooling around. And it also seems quite happy to convert from RAW even without the Canon software.

But I'm really glad to be getting the Canon software to replace what I've lost. I have a Minolta medium-format scanner, and use VueScan instead of Minolta's software, but I still want Minolta's software available.

CDS, 11,000 posts on this forum?!?!?!? I'm awestruck. I thought I was an Internet junkie. When do you sleep?

I'm getting ready to upload whole new batches of images to my web site. I'll swing through and point you guys to it. At least two of the collections will be 10D images, instead of my usual ex-Soviet junque. I've seen no compelling need to upgrade to a 20D, and I'm still holding out for an affordable full-frame DSLR.

I might be mistaken, but I think the Canon software downloads are just updates; they won't work if you don't have a previous version installed?

Breezebrowser (at least the current version) doesn't require any of the Canon software to run. I use both it and Raw Shooter, although I'm really getting to like RS better.

Thank you. I don't know how long I'll last this time--this forum is a bit too active, with too many topics that I can't resist jumping into. I have not learned Bob Gross's brevity, heh, heh.
