What lenses from other manufacturers beside Canon can you recommend for the 20D at around 500 US$?

What type of lens are you looking for? Telephoto? Wide Angle? Prime? Fisheye? Standard Zoom? Constant Aperture?
We need more details before we can just go recommending lenses.

28 -300 mm
75- 300 mm

I can highly recommend the Tamron 28-75 F2.8 for a nice standard zoom lens. Not quite as much reach as you want, but an excellent lens.

I have the 70-300mm, and it's an ok lens for its price.
I would probably rather two lens, this one plus the 28-75 mm .. Rather than a single 28-300mm. But you have to ask yourself, do you want to use only one lens, and not have to change lens? Or get slightly better optical quality at all levels?

Take a look at the -=TOP 10=- Lens recomendations section.. and see how the memebrs voted,. you'll see what 3rd party lenses hold there own against the Canons.. etc..
