i just got a new rebel xt. (got it on MONDAY). when i take photos of stars at night, there is a smudge or dark spot on the bottom right. it consistently appears. is this on my lens or my sensor?

there is an image here: http://www.reemasville.com/index.php?set_albumName=Chocolates&id=smudge&option=com_gallery&Itemid=40&include=view_photo.php

Do you have multiple lenses? If you change them, and it still appears, then it is probably the sensor. Is it only at night?

You'll need to post a full sized image, that one's just too small. Like DK said take a picture with another lens if possible and post that too.

If you think it might be sensor crud, then shoot one frame of a bright sky, or a brightly lit white wall. The brighter, the better, because that will force the aperture to get small, which makes it show up better.

here are 2 files.

the first is the smudges (but i beleive its actually blurred particles...)

the second is the particles. i stopped down the aperture and tried it with a couple of lenses and same result. look especially at the right side of this image. right top and right bottom. i blew the sensor lightly and the largest particle is not there. but the smaller ones didn't budge at all. what should i do? i got it on monday from www.digitalmegastore.com and i'm not sure at all what to do.

At least some of that looked like sensor dust.

any suggestions? this is somewhat disappointing after spending a lot of money (for me) on this camera.

Suggestions?

Only the obvious ones.

You can clean the sensor yourself, or you can pay to have someone do it, or you can try to talk the store into doing it.

It costs me about one penny to clean my camera's sensor, and it takes me about one minute.

Print out those pictures and take them back to the shop and demand a new camera.
I don't know the legal position but what have you got to lose ( apart from some ink ).
If they say no, and you accept that, then follow Bobs advice, it's really not that difficult.

I just don't think you should be put in this position with a new camera.

thanks for the replies. i am going to contact the store on sunday as they are closed saturdays. hopefully they accept it, but like you said, its an unfortunate situation. does canon offer and type of warranty on this?
