Well shot some basketball the other night. I'm so ready for baseball and softball.

These were all shot at 3200ISO with the 70-200 2.8. C&C I need all the help I can get shooting with no flash in a gym.

Due to limitations we have with camera-and-lens only, sometimes this is about as good as it gets.

One thing I'm finding out is when I get exact exposures and crisp focus, my ambient shots are nearly as good as those shots with outboard lighting. Almost. I'm happy with what I'm getting with just a 85mm f/1.8.

Just curious what your shutter speed is. I've been shooting youth BB at ISO 1600 with a 70-200 f/2.8L at 1/400 with acceptable results.

Yeah I love the 85MM 1.8 also. But the 70-200 focus so much faster to me. I guess it just depends on your available light.

Nice action, and cropping, but they seem a tad soft...

it seems they are softer because it seems noise reduction was used, plus you are at the limits of the 40D when shooting at 3200 ISO.

na, I dont buy it, you cant blame the 40D, or the ISO or the Noise reducer...

Check these out, same set up, using the 85, 40D ISO 3200 and Noise Ninja

the secret is picking out photos that are in focus and sharp and not over cropping... too soft cant be blamed on the lack of ability of his or my camera or the noise reducer... (god knows I get enough "soft" ones too, I just delete them though...lol)

ok, so I like my picutres a bit over exposed, but thats my fault as well, not the camera or the process fault...lol

How do I see the EXIF here?

I recommend Opanda IEXIF (freeware)...
http://www.opanda.com/en/iexif/download.htm

It lets you right click on any web image and if the EXIF is there, it'll show it.

I find at 1/400 usually you'll start to see hand, feet and ball blur more. For fast action basketball I'd rec staying at 1/640 or higher to completely stop most movement.

1/400th should be a last resort, 1/640th is ok but you will still see motion blur even in high school. I shot it for womens college ball and it did solid. I try to be at least 1/800th or higher as that should stop hs boys, girls and even womens college bball.

There is no way I would be able to get 640. The pictures would be way underexposed.
