Hi there,
I am finally taking the plunge and am going to buy myself an SLR. I am trying to decide between the Rebel XT and the 10D. The 10D is more expensive by about 350 US$, they haven't gone down much in price in my country. The advantage of the 10D is that I can use the BP511 batteries from my G5, and I have always wanted one....
So which should I get? Any advice will be appreciated.

The 10D would probably be a better choice in terms of build quality. Have you ever considered the 20D? I really enjoy mine.

Thanks for the reply - but the 20D is just too expensive.

Is $300 more really THAT much more, IMO don't go with the 10D either save for the 20D or go with the rebel

The XT is a LOT faster to use than the 300D, it's incredibly responsive. The only advantage of the 10D IMHO is the 2nd wheel, which is great but not worth $350. Get the XT, and batteries from http://sterlingtek.com, you'll have a faster, higher resolution, smaller, more capable camera. Just don't drop it.

I bought the 10D (used from B&H) for many reasons... one of which is because the 20D is just too expensive right now. I've never tried a Digital Rebel or Rebel XT so I can't compare, but I figure that I made the right choice in picking the 10D. Going either way will cost you... you will need to buy lenses, and an external flash (if you don't already own one). With the Rebel XT, you would need to buy a different battery type, plus if you want the grip, it'll come @ a premium because it's the new camera on the market. With the 10D, the grip can be bought used which can save you some more money for lenses. If you look for a used 10D body, it should come in costing less than the Rebel XT.

Unfortunately the 20D is about 800 US$ more than the XT with the kit lens in Australia. We get the worst prices here!

You should go with the XT if the 20D is too expensive. Batteries shouldn't be an issue. YOu can get them for 5 to $20 each on Ebay and 3rd party websites - no need to ever pay Canon for their batteries.
