Iv got a 40d with a speedlite 420EX which id like to use off camera, preferably on a tripod several meters away from the camera.

I cant afford a Speedlite transmitter (ST-E2) at the moment so im looking into a wired/cord option. Id like something longer than the Canon's off camera 1metre flash cord, however my 420Ex doesn’t have a pc terminal. Please could someone offer some advice with regards to what I'll need?

Will I need to buy a 'TTL Hot shoe adaptor 3' a '3 meter cable' and an 'off shoe adaptor'

or

can I buy a cheap pc to hot shoe adaptor and simply buy some kind of long pc cord which directly connects to the camera via the pc connector.

cheers Tom

For cheap - go with some cactus wireless triggers.

For reliable - Alien Bee's Cybersyncs or Pocker Wizards.

How about this??
25ft long E-TTL Cable Cord (http://cgi.ebay.ca/25ft-Long-E-TTL-Cable-Cord-for-Canon-30D-40D-50D-5D_W0QQitemZ170300366934QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCamera_ Cables_Cords?hash=item170300366934&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1215|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A13 18)

I ordered the one for my camera so if you like I can let you know how it works once I get it?

The 420EX is a fully automatic ETTL flash (no manual capability) so the use of a PC sync cord or an RF remote device would be impractical. That leaves only two other options. Either getting an ST-E2 transmitter or a 580EX (or similar) flash to serve as a master or using an extended ETTL cord.

Sad - but true.

The extended ETTL is a good choice. It is also more reliable than most of the wireless choices. AND it is the cheapest! :p
