Are they better since you can have either a bounce and shoot thru umbrella all in one? Are there any cons I'm not aware of?
Thanks

Yes, much more versatile. Additionally, you can use the black cover (when shooting through the umbrella) to mask the light from hitting certain areas of the photo (like the background, for example).

And you also can use one in case it starts raining :-)
(please do not say about ill humor, actually my reversable umbrella was used by a wedding couple when it started raining all of sudden )

Hey guys,
My tests that I'll be posting later will also show comparisons between reflective bounce with black backing and shoot through.

It IS -- after all -- an umbrella. Just as I wouldn't hesitate to use my monopod with steel spike to fight off an animal while hiking, I wouldn't hesitate to use my Westcott umbrella to cover myself and my gear in case it pours...
Seriousness aside ;), given identical material, I wouldn't hesitate to get -- as I did -- the one with removal cover.

Great! Nice to see you are back into controlled testing and measurebating. I always like to read your stuff.

Here (http://www.zarias.com/?p=27)is an excellent comparison. It shows difference between shoot through, reflective and a softbox. It is without a balck cover but I do not think it matters much to see how it works.

I think that's ok but not the best way to look at falloff. You really don't see falloff as accurately with the modifier next to the wall as you do when centering the modifier on a corner letting half the light go to one side, but you do get the idea with Zack's method.

Thanks man. I've been very busy and honestly, these tests were originally for me to get a handle on this information for my own location lighting kit. I'm using a dual flash setup and I wanted to see the differences between single and dual flash and then as usual I got carried away and did a full battery of tests far beyond what I intended. :D

The images and tests done as reflective bounce have the black backing on the umbrella.
