Is this a good deal ?

Adam Hicks

Yes if it's from a reputable source.

Yes it's a good deal if it's from a reputable dealer.

I would be very leary of this seller. Who is it?

One of the best sources for determining street price is B&H. Right now, they're selling that camera for $1,489.95. You might find it for less than that, but you have to scrutinize the seller very closely.

$1339 with free ground shipping from buydig.com for 20D+18-55 kit. That's about as good as it gets from a reputable place.

How about $1214 for the 20D body only from Dell? Add these coupons to bring the price down to $1214 (I tried it and it's legit):
15% Coupon Code: X2DKVWQ?FK7W9$
$60 off Coupon Code CTK?G6$011KT2P

Ouch, the 15% and $60 coupons are too much! I cant take it anymore...
Im ordering tomorrow once I transfer money into my CC account...
I have a feeling that, although the first expenditure induced by this website, it will certainly not be the last!

Dell charges tax for me too which is why these deals never work out that good for me.

buydig.com does not charge tax or shipping, so $1339 with the kit lens is only about $40 more than you would pay from Dell for the body alone. Now, I know the kit lens is not a great lens, but for $40, you could just turn around and sell it for $75.

I got the kit for:
Sub-Total $1,299.15
Shipping $14.00

Tax $0.00
Total $1,313.15
So it is still cheaper for me since I don't have tax. There is free shipping too but I wanted it quicker.

Plus, looks like the $60 coupon is dead now. Must have hit the limit.

I tried to order a 10-22 EF-S about 2-3 weeks ago with these coupons. Went to a backordered state, then they kept changing the estimated ship date by another week at a time until I got frustrated and canceled. Not a great company to deal with.

Hmm, I know if you visit Canada and buy something, you can apply to get tax back...is there a program like that for the US?
That could really help me out...

On this forum as well as other photography forums I visit I see an almost cult like following for B&H. To me their prices are not the best I've seen on the web from other reputable suppliers. I know they specialize in photography, and perhaps if you need guidance in your purchase they are worth the premium you are going to pay. However, if you know what you want I say buy it from the cheapest source possible. Take the Canon 20D for example. Canon makes the camera not B&H. Therefore, a new Canon 20D with a US warranty is the same camera whether you buy it from B&H or someone else.

I'm not knocking B&H, or supporting any other retailer. If you need advice and guidance, go to the retailer that can help you and support them by making your purchase from them. After all, they don't make money by giving advice they make money by selling products. However, if you educate yourself and know what you want go to the cheapest supplier available.

In the case of the 20D you can get it for couple of hundred dollars less then B&H is offering it for sale. The same goes for most of the other items they have for sale. Again, I'm not knocking B&H, they are a great specialty store, I just don't understand why online buyers purchase from them.

I'm not sure where you may be referring to, but I haven't seen the 20D much cheaper than what B&H is selling it for. I don't consider places like Broadway Photo, Abe's of Main, etc., places I would buy from. Dell charges tax to Washington residents and that makes them more expensive than B&H. The $60 coupon had run out and even with the 15% off, it was still higher than B&H after you add the tax.

They are secret codes in a way. Dell carves up their markets into smaller and smaller niches. Some niches get incentive deals from Dell. They include these codes. Sometimes these codes only work for certain class of customers. Sometimes these codes work for everyone. So someone gets a hold of a code that was offered to them...via a mailer, email, or some internal promotion...and they post it to a forum or just tell their friends. Things get passed around quick on the Internet and everyone gets in on the deal. Dell, knowing this, limits the number of uses and places a strict time limit on them, so as to avoid having to field a lot of customer complaints. Really good deals run for very short periods of time....maybe 24-48 hours, and usually work if you get in on them early and you don't have to pay tax.

I don't think B&H has a cultish following here...I see Adorama, 17th Street, Beachcamera, Amazon.com, Ritz, Buy.com, eBay, Rogers, Sterlingtek.com, etc. mentioned on these forums regularly. B&H is a top tier retailer and they usually get the goods on new items fairly quickly and offer reasonable rates. I buy from them sometimes and sometimes I buy from others based on price. I think when a newbie comes on asks where to go, their best bet, considering they don't know anything, would be B&H...mainly because of their friendly service, good return policy, and reasonable pricing. Better they go there and be happy instead of going someplace else and getting ripped off. But you are right...if you are a savvy shopper, there are other places that offer better prices on some items and are reputable.

There is a 'recommended vendors' thread in the marketplace forum.

Other than that, always check www.resellerratings.com before ordering from a seller you haven't dealt with so far.
