I got an email from Nik software offering PhotoVision 2009 (http://www.photovision2009.com/) DVD set for $39 as well as getting 2008 for $39. It looks really interesting, is this worthwhile to an intermediate hobbyist trying to get good?

Interesting enough, I noticed our wedding photographer from 5 years ago was in last years. He is a local photographer I don't think he travels much out from here, but he does good work.

Yes, I would recommend a subscription to Photovision. They send you a DVD every other month with a variety of useful interviews, tips, and tricks. At $39, you can't really go wrong, even if you aren't a professional. Last year was our first year we subscribed and we really enjoyed it. Looking forward to the new material coming in 2009!

Ahh, I thought they sent you the DVD's all at once. Interesting. Seems very reasonably priced so I was tempted to just get it anyway, but was curious what others have thought. I assume grabbing 2008's for $39 would be equally beneficial, or is there a lot of similar content year to year?

They do a new batch of photographers each year (sometimes a few of the same) but it's always new content. I would get both!

It's about like a magazine subscription, with about as much useful content as you'd get from one of the professional photography magazines like the PPA's "Professional Photographer."

The benefit, though, is that you're seeing a professional portrait or wedding session in video instead of just reading a description of it. The studio walk-throughs are interesting, as well as the business discussions.

I don't know how worthwhile it would be for an amateur, but for a beginning professional it's definitely more worth your money than any newstand magazine.

I just finished watching the 2008 edition, it was interesting and definitely worth the money. Not much of it was really related to what I do, but I am going to start watching the 2009 editions I already have now.

Cool -- thanks for coming back to let us know how it went. I also enjoy PhotoVision and it's a great deal for the money. As you already know, it's really designed for those in the business-end of photography, but even if your not, it's definitely worth $39.

I subscribed. For $39, heck, why not? As stated it is a lot like a mag subscription. (They get mailed on the even months.) I find them very inspirational and motivating. I like hearing the info directly from the photographer rather than through a writer that may or may not get the points. It had sparked ideas not even related to the subject they are talking about. But what I really like is seeing them work. Magazines only show the final works. But PhotoVision shows HOW they work.
