I've seen the designation of "LD" on some Tamron lenses. Would this be considered similar to Canon's "L" designation?

No ... LD is for "low dispersion" and it's pretty common amongst Tamron lenses. The closest they have to an "L" designation would be "SP" (for Super Performance ... according to their website). Not L by a longshot, but it is their version of a premium designation.
