i have had my sx10 is for over a month now and have heard a springing type of noise inside on the right hand(battery) side when ever i move the camera. it goes away a second or 2 after the camera is held still. the camera works fine and i have never dropped it or anything. i called canon tech support and the guy said that it was not a normal noise but he would go an take a look at their sx10 they keep for reference. he said he heard the same noise so it must be normal. do any of you sx10 owners hear this?

Is this when the camera is on or off?

If you turn off the IS mode, the noise should disappear.

It is likely that the IS is active, hence.

Could also be the orientation sensing mechanism which tells the camera which end of your photo is "up".

I just received my SX10 yesterday and noticed this noise too. So I assume this is normal then?

Like I said, the guy at canon tech support checked their sx10 is they keep on hand for reference said he heard the noise to so it must be normal. he even mentioned that it was coming from the battery area (same as mine) though i did not tell him where the noise was coming from in my camera first.

Why don't you call Canon then post your results. Friday night I am bringing mine back to the camera shop to compare to those they have in stock. The noise in my camera just seems to pronounced to be normal. Its not something rolling around, it's springing back and forth.

the springing back and forth

is the IS mechanism inside the lens. it happens on my s5.

well guys i sent my camera to canon to get it checked out for the noise and because the grip felt like it had a bit of loose play instead of a solid feel i think a $400 camera should have. they sent it back saying everything was well within specs. my camera takes fantastic pics and i shoot movies at 640x480 then convert them to mpegs and burn them to discs so i can watch them on my 27" tv with my dvd player and they look and play great. my only complaint is that at times i can hear the is noise during video playback. bottom line, sx10 is is a good bang for the buck. i will probably upgrade to an sx1 for the hi def video and raw capabilities.
