Ok, before some people give the usual advice :) I've read all the stickys.. Ok here’s what I'm asking.. I don't have any lens's yet and the lens I want would be for the 300D.. I want something that can be used for both people, usually candid street, or sometimes portrait something like the 50/ 1.8 and something that can also be used for some wildlife.. nothing like tigers or stuff just some little wildlife (my two favorite shooting subject).. Is there a good in-between starter lens that can do those two things? I don't want to spend to much to start try to keep the price as low as possible.. Thank you for all the help!

The fifty is cheap enough, less than a hundred bucks, and there are a bunch of inexpensive longer zooms out there. Go to Canon lens reviews website and check them out. Good luck.

You are not going to find one lens that will do good job on both street photos and wildlife. You need wide angle for street shooting and telephoto for wildlife. The closest that any lenses come would be the 28-300 lenses by Sigma, Tamron or Tokina. You will eventually find they are neither wide enough nor sharp enough at the telephoto length, but they could be a good starting point.
I would consider buying the camera with the 18-55 kit lens. Eventually you will probably want to upgrade, but it does not cost very much if you buy it with the camera so you can't lose much on it. For wildlife I would look for a used 400/5.6 or 300/4 lens. Currently only Canon makes these lenses, but there are still some good used ones available made by Sigma and Tokina. With a 300/4 you will eventually want to add a 1.4x teleconverter.
Do yourself a favor and start leaning to use a tripod for wildlife. That is the main secret for good telephoto shots.
The Sigma 50-500 is an excellent compliment to the 18-55 if you want to spend more to on the wildlife lens. I often use the Sigma 50-500 and a Canon 17-40 for a two lens combination that goes from wide angle to telephoto.

Well the fifty fifty is an excellent choice priced between 70 to 80 dollars as far as for wildlife there aren't to many cheap choices. I have a sigma 50-500 with a 2X TC which aint one of the better choices but priced around 1000 dollars for both you may want to look at the 100-400L IS

I hate to say this but what type of budget are we talking about? If your looking for a lens to work with but not break the bank, but while getting a better understanding of how your camera works. Then i would say ya get 50mm 1.8. If your budget is willing try and get a few lens that cover a wide variety of lengths. I started with Canons 28-135mm IS, Canons 75-300mm IS and 50mm 1.8 which covered most ranges that I use for landscape, animals, some macro and people. I currently still using all 3 lens but going to upgrade my 75-300 to 100-400mm in the next month or so.
