Anyone have any recommendations of good online galleries.
Initially free, just for sharing, but also that support royalty payments for users buying your images.
UK support would be good too.

I'm using PBase, though they've had some problems of late. I think that they've got things straightened out, but I'm not 100% sure yet.
EDIT - I'm not sure if they support sales of images or not. I don't sell through them, just display.

I run three domains of my own, each with 500mb of space. One public and two private. They are hosted by a very large UK ISP who do nothing else other than host websites and mail. Peformance is excellent and support is very professional. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for.
Be careful of some of the sites that offer to sell your images, the returns are not worth the effort.

I use Flickr for public sharing (right now just for my Photo Friday images), but I also have my own personal web space that I use for stuff I share with the family and whatnot.

smugmug.com
give it a try. It is not free, but it has an amazing service.
If you want to suscribe, use this personal coupon fqN2FHmZ0Spf6 in the 'Referred by' field on the signup form and you will save US $5
take a look. I was looking for a free site, but when I see smugmug, I prefer to pay and have a great service.
Best Regards.

Thanks for all your input so far.
smugmug looks good, also took a look a pbase which looks the most pro, fotopic also OK but hard to find things and looked a bit more for snaps.
Still undecided... so I may well trial smugmug and pbase to see which I like best.

What ppuga did not tell you is that by using the referral code to save $5, you are also giving someone else (him/her perhaps?) a $10 rebate on their next renewal - that's the way smugmug works.
If you want to give him/her the rebate for referring you, that's up to you, but I think people should be upfront about these things. In my case, I emailed smugmug and asked them for a referral code that would see the $10 going to a worthy cause, and they were happy to oblige.
No offence intended ppuga.

Fotopic! It's in the UK and you get 250 MB, which is a huge amount of space, for free, and no annoying ads etc. on your pages.

smugsmug is okay. I hate when people refer it just for the 10 bucks off though. Grrr ::)

I've been using www.fototime.com (http://www.fototime.com/) for my online photo hosting. They used to have a free trial version that is what I originally started using, but I'm not sure if they still have it or not, as I've been a happy paid subscriber with them for three years now.:D They will also do prints of your stored photos for a reasonable fee, and they ship really fast (I had finished product in hand in three days). They also do the usual novelty stuff like photo mugs. I had them make a couple mugs with photos of a friends hot rods as a present, and I was happy with them, and my friend is now into collecting mugs with photos of His cars on them. ;)

AS for the free ones, I just started using www.flickr.com for my girlfriends photos. I, personally, have written my own photo sharing (and CMS) software that I use.

No offence, that's the way it works, and its great that you can have this $10 rebates for each referal you make, I think everybody wins. And let me put it clear I don't do it for the money, I think smugmug its a great site, with 3 different options at different cost for each kind of user. I would not recommend it if it doesn worth it.
Not offence, really. ;)
I forget... just one thing more, nobody here is obligated or have to use the referal code I give, when I first get to smugmug, I use a referal someone give me, doesn't have anything bad.
well, just my point of view. And I think that the best site anyone can have, is the one where you feel confortable to use, as a owner and as a user, no matter what brand is it.
So, for the guy who ask in the first post, go and have a try on different ones.
Good luck.

i'm in australia (i doubt it matters where you come from)
and i use 2 services.
Www.photobucket.com i use that for little images under 200kb. it's free but it limits all images to 200 or under.
and because my net is with alphalink, i get 10mb free space with them, so i can pic out 8kb of good pics, and i can use the other 2kb for my setup - i use ExtremeThumbnailCreator to make up a layout for my pics.

Have my own site hosted. Sets me back about £45 per year, including my own domain name.
Used the free Snipe Gallery source as a basis for my own look and feel (see www.snipegallery.com).
