Just picked up a used 70-200 2.8 and want to remove the tripod ring. Do I have to remove the small circlip that looks like it retains the knob, or is there another way. What's behind the secret panel on the foot? My newer lens' don't require any tools to remove.

Any help?

You loosen the clip then rotate it until it slides off :)

Your tripod ring should have a red dot. Line that up with the normal red mounting dot (and with the tension full loose) and the ring should slide off the back end of the lens.

There are keys on the lens and slots in the ring that have to align.
