I noticed in the last week or so the email notification has been really off. I sent an email to the admin but I wanted to post it here as well to see if other people were experiencing it as well. A few different things are happening.
1) No notification for any new messages to a thread until after 4-5 posts have been made up to 18 hours later then all of a sudden I get a notification of a new post.
2) No notification at all.
3) Notification, you click the link and you are on page 2, yet your first post was on page 6. So it is giving you notification to a post back in time.
Many of the notifications do work in a timely fashion, so it is not completely broke, but I am seeing a large amount of the messages lately fall into these categories. I have confirmed none of them are showing up in a spam folder.

No one else having this problem? Had it happen again today, there were 2 responses to my thread and I never got notified only noticed cause I had to log in to post an update to the thread and noticed them.

Logs tell me that all mails sent to you were accepted by your mail server (about 10-30 messages a day). So POTN and your mail server understand each other. If POTN does not initiate sending: that must be Vbulletin bug.
Note that server does not send mails immediately when thread is responded.

I do get a lot of messages, so it works a lot of the time. But many times I don't, and sometimes I get them 18 hours later (after 2-10 posts have been made, and all of a sudden it decides to send one based on the final post). They usually do some in fairly quick almost instantly.

Do you have the same problems with your domestic emails (say send an email from your msn account to your normal email address and see how long it typically takes to come through).

No, never. It is GMail, so it is quite reliable.
But I never got notification you posted. I just noticed when I logged in and went to look for a previous post I wanted to comment on this was on the top of my list.
This is happening quite often, I see it multiple times a day on multiple threads.

If I was to guess, I am only receiving 75% of the email notification, a perfect example is this one here:
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=7312329&postcount=3
I never got notified about this thread being updated, but when I looked through my subscriptions (which I have to do daily because I am not being notified so often) I noticed this was updated.
Has no one else been noticing this?
I keep checking my spam folder for anything from @photography-on-the.net and there is never anything there. I am using GMail for my personal email so it is very reliable.
I am noticing this on a daily basis where I am just not getting notified. I still get 10-30 other notifications as you mentioned before, I have built up a ton of thread subscriptions by posting on the forums in the last few months, so it isn't failing 100% of the time, it seems like 10-20% of the time but consistently.

I have noticed it alot in the word association thread. When I do get notice of a reply, it can be several pages back of my reply.

I've been noticing it daily, to 3-5 threads at a time. The only way I can be sure if a thread has been updated is by logging in and checking my User CP and looking at my list of subscriptions for anything that is bold (unread). I know most people don't do this, so they would never know they are not getting forum notification.

Instant Email, (FYI, didn't get notified you replied either).
It works a lot of the time, as I do get a lot of email notification, but many times it does not work. About 10-20% of the time it seems to fail.

Still not getting notification for a large portion of the replies, I have no idea knowing what threads are updated as I only get the notification about 80% of the time or less, unless I log into the forums and click on User CP and look at the list of threads that were updated which is far to time consuming to do on a regular basis.

Well, the server does send mails, and retry in few hours if remote mail server does not reply.
What I am wondering though is that why it is harder to keep UserCP page on and refresh that from time to time compared to opening a mail program (which is usually a web page anyways), and refreshing that from time to time?

If I kept the usercp page up for all the forums I visit, I would have 100 tabs up, I don't use 90% of them often, but this one I use a lot. I like being notified when it is updated rather than having to go in and click refresh, I rather not spend my time looking back at a page and hitting refresh. My GMail (where I have these notifications) is up 24/7 in my browser and I can glance over at it from my other monitor.
I get some of the mails, but not all and they are not going into the spam filter. GMail is quite reliable and rarely if ever looses mail. I never received notification to your reply but saw it under the User CP.
In the cases this happens, it is not that the original email didn't go through and it is waiting for a few hours for it to try again (usually most servers try again in 5 minutes, then 15, then 4 hours, and so on) as I never receive these messages. It has been 4+ hours since you replied and I have yet to get notification, I don't think I ever will. If someone else replied to the thread, there is a 60/40 chance I would get that notification.

That list shows posts for all forums in one page, just like Gmail. I'm not sure what you are talking about.

I see zero errors in mail logs for your gmail address. So if there is a problem it must be vbulletin bug.

It is considerably more work to use the user control panel, if I had to do that for every forum I was a member to, it would be unmanageable. Also GMail is up all the time and is a central location to receive notification and emails, watching other pages adds more work and dramatically increases the time to notification. I really do not want to go into a website and hit refresh all the time to see if there are new messages, that is why I refuse to frequent forums that use Wordpress BBPress because there is no notification, and I'm not going to keep going to back to check if there are new messages. The user cp is easier as it is centralized, but it is still inconvienient.
I don't see any message sent at 20:05 yesterday (when you replied to this thread), that was one of the messages I did not get. When you replied yesterday, I did not see it for 4 hours as I noticed it through the user CP.
I see your using an old version of vBulletin, that might be the problelm. I too suspect it is something with vBulletin as well rather than mail delivery itself. I just wanted to let you guys know, I come her enough so I usually find it eventually if there is a missed message but I have been noticing it on a daily basis when I am posting.
