why do they call them the 36ers?

Good question David
And yes I do have the answer...

They were known as the Adelaide City Eagles when they joined the NBL in 1982 but the general populace didn't exactly embrace the original title, so the club changed its name and brand to the Adelaide 36ers in 1983 to reflect the history of the city's settlement in 1836.
Their colours, navy blue, red and yellow are commonly known as the tri-colours and are the state colours of South Australia.

Most sporting teams representing South Australia also wear the tri-colours.

The Adelaide 36ers have been the most successful club in the NBL's history.

Thanks for asking and hope you enjoy the history lesson

Regards
Phil

I was gonna guess something like the city was situated on the 36th parallel or similar...

Thanks for sharing!

Do the BB players there make an inordinate amount of money as do most our professional athletes here in the US and in most countries?

I wouldn't say it's an inordinate amount (although it's way more than most people earn) as the teams are all salary capped.
Most teams have some American imports - the likes of Julius Hodge - as well.
Hodge has just left the club after a dispute with management, apparently over of all things, money.
