"The Beartooth Highway is the most spectacular road in America." I've seen a lot of spectacular roads, and I couldn't pick just one. However, Beartooth is definitely in my top five. Starting in Red Lodge, Montana, the highway swings down into Wyoming, back into Montana, then back to Wyoming and finally ends at the NE gate of Yellowstone NP. At 9000-10,000 feet, the highway provides non-stop scenery of mountain peaks, sheer drops for thousands of feet, more than 300 lakes, and abundant wildflowers.

Maybe its time for a Western US POTN meet. I'm always awestruck at the beautiful scenery out that way.
And these images capture it very, very well.

Thanks everyone. I'm in favor of a POTN conference out west this summer. How about Colorado (since I'm planning to be there anyway)?

These are spectacular pics, Stan. There is just no way to see all of the beautiful places in our great country, so shots like this on the forum give us all an idea of God's creation. He is a "master craftsman'!!

His name was Charles Kuralt, with a K. :) I remember watching his shows.

Nice pics. They look a little funny to me, are they altered in photoshop, did you use a filter, or is it just the distance/scale of things appearing a little odd?

Michaelmjc - As a matter of fact, the scenery does make it somewhat hazardous to drive that highway. I always remind myself of that before driving a scenic highway. It's better to stop often to take in the views.
NickC - Thanks for the correction. I should have known that.
tim - I can't say why they look funny to you. To me, they look exactly as I remember the real thing. It has been 7 or 8 months since I took these, so I can't say for sure what I did in PSE. Normally, I adjust levels and contrast. On a bright day that we had, and with the camera I was using then, it's doubtful the levels were far off. I don't remember if I used a polarizer for those, but that's possible.
I really appreciate everyone's comments. The Beartooth region is very special, and not that well known. Hopefully, I've given a few people another place to visit.

The lakes are a very dark shade of blue, and things are hazy in the distance. The haze is probably just the distance, and it's entirely possible the lakes really look like that, they just look different to any other lakes i've seen before.

They remind me a great deal of Rocky Mountain National Park. And they are very good Stan. Good enough that I wished I had taken them . . . nice job.

Stan,
Do you have an RV? How do you get to all these cool places.
You'll have to keep us posted on your travels this summer. I'm jealous. Only 30 years till retirement.

Thanks again for the comments.
Rod, funny that you mention Rocky Mountain NP, as that is where we'll be for part of this coming summer. And, yes, Beartooth Highway is a lot like Trail Ridge Road. I'm excited at the prospect of returning to Colorado, and with a better set of gear than before.
shawnee, my old camera was only 38 mm at the widest. Now I have the Rebel and several lenses, as wide as 16 mm equivalent. I expect to get more landscapes cropped top and/or bottom to appear as panos.
Dave, you may have missed this in earlier posts. My wife and I live in a motorhome and travel much of the year, mostly out west. Retirement does allow one to enjoy oneself, if one is lucky. We traveled some while working, but the last 10 years have been a blast. (BTW, I've been enjoying your gallery. Your profession gives you a big advantage when it comes to travel.)

Luckily, I really am. I am planning a cross country trip for the summer; yellowstone is one of my stops and it looks like I just found the road to take.
Those are some beautiful photos.
