Does anybody know the make of a good portable soft box that can be easily mounted onto a Canon 580 flash?? If so where do you buy it?

Thanks!!

I'd imagine 580 is not nearly powerful enough to handle a softbox.

Nonsense!

I've seen people using softboxes with Canon 550's and Nikon SB 80's
I'm sure a 580 would be powerful enough

The problem with soft boxes is that its hard to mount the flashgun to a typical softbox speed ring. A flash gun wont support the weight of a softbox. I made a softbox out of 36x23x15 cardboard box, some foam sheets, aluminium foil and some ripstop nylon. It actually works pretty well but I mount the softbox to my lightstand then slide the flashgun in from the back and trigger it with an optical slave. Some people have had good results with a softlighter umbrellas (hybrid softbox/umbrella) and a flashgun.

The available options are limited but...

Lumiquest sells a whole assortment of flash devices, to include SoftBox attachments.

You can purchase them at B&H Video and can check them out at Lumiquest website.

This one looks pretty soft, but you'd have difficultly mounting a 580EX onit...

Yes, the Lumiquest product is good. It is small enough to fold down and be portable, yet it gets enough of the soft box job done that it is useful.

You know what I love about it Bob? People always see it and go wow, thats a big fancy flash!! how much did that flash cost it's amazing!! LOL.... I always laugh when I hear it, they think the softbox is the flash head... I have really enjoyed having it around. It is really nice to use in a variety of shooting conditions. Especially if you dont have the right ceiling to bounce off of ....

I don't give a damn about what people think when they look at the soft box. I'm more interested in what they think when they see the result shot.

I'm a people person what can I say, I enjoy reactions of all kinds. I'm sure my shots arent on your level yet so I'm just happy to get one off..I think you may have misunderstood what I meant by my previous statement. I just get a laugh out of the reactions I get to the size of it on the flash. Of course I will like them to approve of the pictures......
