I've had the SX1 for a few weeks now and had lousy weather. Now at last we've got some clearer air, so I've been trying to see what I can do with it. I went to the Wallacestone monument, which affords a great view over the Forth Valley in central Scotland (http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&FORM=LMLTCC&cp=55.974603~-3.734751&style=r&lvl=16&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&phx=0&phy=0&phscl=1&encType=1)

1. Here's the basic scene

2. The other end of the zoom, looking at a fairly close-at-hand subject

Both of the above, I am completely happy with.

3. Looking towards the docks, the picture is a bit flat. A look at the histogram shows that it needs pulled in quite a long way top and bottom

4. Same as above

5. Further afield still, you can pick out the Great Hall of Stirlign Castle, thirteen miles away!

6. Hills! Again, the histogram issues are very apparent

7. I liked the army of electricity pylons

8. Kincardine Village - about six miles away

I tried editing a few - mostly just pulling in the histogram, maybe a slight saturation boost. And of course straightening the horizons.

9. The Docks

10. The Docks again

13. The Army

14. Kincardine and its Bridge

All in all, I'm pretty comfortable wiht htis camera, in a way that I wasn't a week ago.

Not much you can do about the atmospheric haze that caused the loss of contrast. In the right lighting, a polarizer will help. Other than that, post-processing to spread the curve is about it.

Can a polarizer or UV filter be added to these cameras?

Not yet; Lensmate is apparently working on an adapter; until then the only option would be to hold the polarizer in front of the lens (which procedure would work best with a tripod).
