If you're using Photoshop, select 'Save for Web' . That will give you a gif file that will be small enough.

That didn't work. I used 60 pixels and it was 4.94 kb

Well, I don't know what to tell you. I just created a new avatar for myself doing exactly what I suggested. I created an 80 X 80 image, selcted 'Save for Web' under file, gave it a name, and it created a GIF file. I then uploaded it without any difficulty.
Maybe you're not in 8-bit mode? I really can't imagine why it wouldn't work otherwise. Maybe someone else has a suggestion.

Attach the avatar to a post so we can take a look.

Were you trying to save it as a GIF file? If so and you can't get the file small enough at 80x80, then try "Save for Web" as a JPEG file at medium resolution. If it's still too large, then set it to low resolution. And make sure "ICC Profile" is unchecked.

Speaking of new avatars, is that a Morning Dove sitting on the neighbours roof and shot with a 500 f/4? Sweet!

Thank you all for your help. I used a different computer and it worked fine. Don't know what the deal was, but thanks so much for the help...;)
