A few from my trip down to Arizona...not bad for only having a 200mm lens i think. I sure do fully understand now why they use the 400 though!

Thanks for making this Cubs fan's day. Excellent shots! Looks like you saw some good sights while you were there, also. ;)

Excellent -- looks like the intense Arizona sunshine presents similar problems for baseball shooters as our Florida sunshine does. At a Braves ST game the other day a shooter friend let me try his 400 for a few shots -- sweet, mighty sweet. However, considering its price, the fact that I can get closer to the action in our ballpark and info provided by other sports shooters on this forum I've just about decided to get myself a 300mm f2.8. Our Daytona Cubs open the season with an exibition game Wednesday night April 6 -- I just might be shooting with a 300 by then.

Yeah i'm hoping to have my 300mm f/4 before mid-season, it's not f/2.8 but i think it'll help

66 of our 70 home games this season are night games and I fear an f/4 would be near useless for me except for the 4 day games. I expect that even with an f/2.8 I'll be out of business by the third inning on clear evenings and probably never even start when it's heavily overcast.

great stuff TIM ! Glad you didn't have any bee problems ! ;)
Now you will get to see Nomar do that ritual thing with his gloves and wrist all year long like we used to up here !

I'm flattered
Nomar is very anal with his gloves...it's kind of amusing. He even does it at shortstop every once and a while.

You know, I think a 400mm would almost be too much. These are some real nice shots, and I think the 200mm worked real well...

You also dont see how much i had to crop to get these images. I can assure you, a 300 or 400mm prime would be dandy. The two canon shooters that were there were using 400's. Aside from what it looks, i wasnt actually on the field, i was able to sneak down into a little corner of the first row away from anyone with a ticket for those seats. It just hapened to be right next to where all the photographers were, which was just behind first.

Even the apparent tight shot on Nomar (who looks characteristically unhappy) lacks the sharpness you get used to seeing from 400mm primes.
Excellent shot of Nomar about to make contact. Perfect batting form; eye on the ball, etc. I'm always amazed that our cameras can nearly stop a 90 mph baseball. Of course hitting one is even more amazing. In this case, your reflexes and Nomar's were equal -- well done.
Tim, I think we once pointed out that you would have to move up one day to the big primes. Spring is here; different equipment is needed as you transition to outdoor sports; time to make the upgrade.
BTW - enjoyed your series of shots and looking forward to the next.

Thanks for the kind words. It felt so great to be shooting sports with shutter speeds of 1/5000 at ISO 200...i thought i liked shooting basketball, but i honestly dont know anymore
I'm very close to pulling the trigger on a 300mm f/4 and 1.4 extender. I want to get a telephoto prime, this is the most logical option for me. I wish i could somehow afford a 300 or 400 f/2.8, but thats just so far down the road. I cant wait.

All great catches! I think my favorite would be that shot of Nomar hitting. Wow, talk about timing it right!
On the whole Nomar thing with his gloves, I even saw him doing it in the on deck circle when I was there a few weeks back. It must have worked that day, he hit 2 homers. Of course he had 3 errors too! Maybe he should wear them when he throws!

Coming from someone that played baseball most of his youg life, I can tell you that some of the most superstitious people I have ever met were in baseball.
Great shots Timmy.

Agreed, Ovi ... hockey players are a very close second (although most of their superstitious behavior occurs before and after games (and what they wear) ... not as much during).
