Figured that it would come out like crap, so it was just a garbage shot of a garbage subject. But anyway, I was at the beach, and I wondered what would happen if I did an HDR image made from 6 separate pictures of waves.

I know, motion is bad, and waves move a lot. But I was just sort of curious what it would look like. So...here's the result.

I was sort of hoping to get the sea to look sort of foamy or something, sort of how it looks in those long exposure shots when people leave the shutter open for a long-ass time. Didn't quite work out though.

I'll have to try that again though, because I think I found a flaw with my methods. I used AEB combined with the high speed burst mode to get three "dark" exposures in less than a second. I then changed the exposure compensation (which at least took a couple of seconds) and then took three "bright" exposures in rapid succession.

Problem is, each set of three bracketed exposures was made so close together that I was really only photographing TWO different wave patterns even though I made six exposures.

So...that's something to try out next time. It'll probably still look like crap (maybe even MORE like crap) but I wonder what it would look like if I took a similar picture using 9 or 12 exposures, and actually spaced out all 12 shots so that the wave pattern in each one is significantly different.

Also, there's some weird artifact going on in the waves (you can see it towards the left, near the shore) where after the HDR merger there are spots and flecks of no detail. Not sure what's going on there. But I kind of suspect that it'd get worse if I were to do 9 exposures spaced out evenly over a longer period of time.

But what can I say? When you perform experiments, sometimes they work out and sometimes they don't. I might not have gotten any good pictures, but at least it was fun experimenting, and I actually got to learn something.

This is a nice shot and a great first attempt!

Hey All,

I agree with Tiger - I like it. What is the old saying "one person's crap is another's treasure" or something to that effect. I especially like how you skillfully added the words Photomatix to it! :)
