I do some photographic volunteer work for the Special Olympics. Normally they just ask for a lot of shots that they can use in their publications and websites. So I blast away, take a lot of photos, and hand them a DVD at the end of the day.

Recently, they said that they wanted to submit photos and stories to newspapers throughout the state to generate additional PR. My specific task was to photograph athletes from 6 different regions and to get their names and home towns.

A typical event has hundreds of participants and they are not always identifiable by a number on a jersey. How should this task be approached?

Do you shoot a bunch of pictures, find the good ones and then find out who the people in the photos are?

Do you photograph one or two athletes that you can ID?

Thanks
