I was just wondering if anyone carries their camera while bike riding. I have found some very beautiful opportunities while riding my mountain bike and wished i had my camera with me. I was just seeing if anyone has come up with any ideas I might adopt. I am sick of driving to the park with my gear, when I can simply ride my bike and get some exercise at the same time. I want to get a rack for my bike with my tripod on the side, but wondering about bags and what equipment might work. Any ideas?

I used to do a daily 6 mile bike commute with my camera and laptop strapped to my back in a messenger bag. Im sure you will gets tons of recommendations but I modded a chrome messenger bag for my needs and comfirt, never had a problem with it till it got stolen =/. I also rigged some velcro loops to attach my tripod to the bag, but me taking my tripod out was extremely rare.

ditch the tripod.

i recommend buying a point and shoot and a gorillapod. mount the gorillapod on your bike and take the camera off when you want to shoot. or make a timelapse video using chdk.

I currently have a Lowepro sling, but I just like having full control of my body and really could not stand riding with just a backpack on. I will stop by the bike store tomorrow and see what I can come up with and let everyone know

I do, but I ride at evening alot when I get home from school, and well my girlfriend currently has it 100 miles away for the semester. I ride near a creek that is just gorgeous at sunset so I really would like to make the best of these shots. Upon looking at the Trek website I may have found something that might work, and Ill keep ya posted

i use my lowpro expo pack, works ok but i dont ride like madman with it, just to get to photo site faster,, tho a good p-s is looking like a good idea for me on some days when the weather is iffy, but thats why i use the lowpro if i need to i can seal the pack up water tight, good luck.. what and where ya ride? you can see soem of my results here www.mbphotos.exposuremanager.com (http://www.mbphotos.exposuremanager.com)

since i work at a bike shop i decided to photog events when i can.. haha also helps get feedback on current gear and helps me sell or not sell stuff

Haha, thats classic. I currently ride an old Schwin road bike and Trek 820. As for now, its just going to school and on mostly paved paths

I understood he wanted to carry the gear while riding a bike, not take pictures while in motion.

If my take is correct then a backpack will carry whatever gear you want and a tripod. If you don't like backpacks when riding then either go for a P&S setup to reduce the size or use something such as saddlebags.

good stuff! im guessing its a fixie? as for on teh go shots i just pick up a hero wide helmet cam, so far results are good, i still need to try the photo every 2 sec or 5 sec it shoots still in 5mpixel, im wanting to test in warmer weather haha.

I had found this and Im going to check it out tomorrow. Looks like it snaps in place on the rack so it should not rattle too much. Of course using lots of foam to line the camera and lenses.

if you want secure i would look at the topeak stuff they have a rack and bag system that locks in on a rail system,, so the bag it as secure as the rack, and you dont need to worry about velcrow, expect to pay about 50 per part( bag and rack), but its beafy , the shop i work at carries it i think its worth the extra security and the rack is clamp on so when you dont want to have it on is super easy to take off.

I ride with my full kit most times I go riding (3 flashes, stands etc.), but that's because I primarily shoot bmx photo's, I've never really had a problem, i just need a decent sturdy bag to replace my cheapo ebay job.

Ortlieb makes a pretty nice handlebar bag, their Classic 5 model, that doubles as a shoulder rig. They also make inserts for it which accommodate a DSLR & stuff.
Kinda clunky mounting system, though. I'm considering getting it

Here's a link to an Ortlieb outlet, with photos. I forgot it on my earlier post.

I've got a lowepro fastpack 250

can stick your camera in the bottom, room for odd bits of bike gear in the top, inner tube etc

and you can also put a camelbak reservoir in the laptop pocket for hydration

Why would you want your Camera UNDER everything else?

I take my gear with me alot while on my bike. I stuff my 30D and 3 lenses in to a Tamrac Velocity. However my back is sore if I do this for 3 days in a row.
