I had some time on my hands the other night and wanted to see if i could use AB and photomatrix to make an HDR out of one shot, and i think that it turned out pretty good

C&C are welcomed

It certainly has the tonemapping qualities of a three exposure process and looks like a nice shot of all the girls. It's a little dark though. Did you use -1 0 +1 or -2 0 +2?

Tad too cartoony for my taste. Perhaps tone it down a tad.

I think that i went -3 0 +3 with this one, I think that it lost some of details when it got converted on photobucket

Yeah it's a cartoony, but that is what i was going for with this one

I like the cartoony aspect but find the shot overall too dark for my taste.

I'll have to grab the original one from my computer and see if it does look brighter....but yeah i am noticing that it is darker.

I think the cartoony nature is the style that he was looking for, but I would like to see the center of the picture brighter.

I'd hate someone to suger-coat a critique of my pictures, so I won't do it with you, I think that is a very very bad picture. I think the attempt at HDR completely ruins it.

The picture itself is good. Great interaction going on between the subject matter, nice smiles etc, very casual and informal. But I think the post processing totally lets it down..It's way too dark and flat. A good HDR will give the image some "pop", but the tonal range on this image is too low to allow it.

I hope you don't take that the wrong way, I'm always worried that people don't like a shot I post but won't say they hate it just incase they think it's rude to do so. I'd always like people to be truthful with me. I don't say this to offend you.

I think you took a great picture, and I think photomatix ruined it.

I agree with the post above me. I'd like to see the original. Right now, the only thing I think of when I look at this is elves...

Yes, I think the tone mapping did not do it justice. It all depends on what you think it should look like, but I think it will be appreciated by more if it was re-tone mapped. It should not have the blown highlights on the lower left child, nor on the dress of the right most woman. It's also flat, and lacks that pop(as stated above). Re map it and show us again.

Nice capture, but a little strange tone mapping.

I tried to attaching it to the post, but i am losing a lot of image when i re-size it....the second image is the original that i started with

Hey All,

I'm thinking it is much better than the original. That said it is a bit dark but I'm wondering in terms of my other post on Thinkin on HRDs if the problem is that this scene needed perhaps 5 exposures to capture the range in detail better? As is the girl on the right would have her chest blown out (gruesome sounding) if it were any brighter. Would more exposures have allowed better processing?
