I'm not sure if this is even a fair question, but I'm having trouble deciding between these two cameras. I'm looking for an upgrade, I have a Kodak Point N Shoot now, and want something that can take high quality photos. From what I've read both of these cameras are great options. Obviously one is an SLR and one is not.

Is there something amongst the two that would make me sway one way or the other? Price and size of the equipment are non factors for me.

THX!

Decide what you want.

Best IQ at the expense of convenience and portability: SLR all the way
decent IQ with high portability and convenience : Compact.

My guess is that if you are not very happy with your results from the Kodak, you won't be THAT much happier with the SD990. It is one of the best compacts, but it is still a p&s. If you get the SLR, be prepared to put some effort into learning how to drive it. SLRs do great in auto mode, but you have to understand the manual settings to get the most out of the camera.

I say go for the SLR.

I debated between an SLR and a G9 for the longest time. I'm very happy I went for the 40D. Like the above person said, a P&S will always be just that..its like slightly upgrading your Kodak. All the accessories make an SLR great in my opinion. Lens, flashes, etc.. It'll take your photography to a whole new level.
