I was looking over this DVD this weekend and he mentioned a lot of good accessories. One of the accessories that he mentioned was a Sunpak strobe. I do not remember the model # but he said that it is no longer in production.

Does anybody know what other strobe could/would replace the Sunpak or where I can find the one that he is using?

Thanks.

Probably the Sunpak 383. A lot of people are going with the Vivitar 285HV now. I have a Sunpak 26DX that was available in the mid-1980s and a predecessor to the 383. Nice flashes - swivel/tilt, lots of power, variable power setting, and a few others.

yep, he was talking about the 120J. GOOD luck finding one as they are no longer made and can be hard to get a hold of.

Yep, Its the 120J. Is there a replacement for it? The Vivitar is more directional and 120J can be used as a bare bulb.

Any ideas?

The only ones I know of that work like the 120j are the Qflash series from Quantum. Not cheap by any means (relatively speaking compared with speedlites). Almost better off buying some ABs with a Vagabond II.

Course if anyone knows of another brand/model that works like the 120j please post.

Yeah, those are the one that I am actually considering; ABs with the Vagabond II. i really like the option to have a high power strobe w/o the need to carry a battery pack like the Vagabond.

If you can find a 120J it's a great flash with a real flash bulb and parabolic reflector. Every so often they're around but get sucked up pretty quickly.

Anyone know why the 120j was discontinued? Seems like there is a market for this type of flash again which can be probably attributed in no small part to the Onelight DVDs and Mr. Arias.

I a couple of them listed earlier but I wonder if it's worth getting the battery pack with the strobe. Thanks for sending the listings.

And there is a product, but you will have to spend some $$:

Yeah, I'm aware of the Qflash, and yeah it's pricey. I just assumed the 120j was cheaper.

Yeah, I was reading at some of Adorama's press releases about the 120J and I think it would retail for around $280 or so.

Wow! If that was the selling price when it was available then people selling their 120j on eBay are making a killing.

Its very worth getting the battery pack, but you will pay an arm and a leg for a 120j+battery pack now a days. I had 2 and loved them (got them for about $200 each).

With battery pack recharge for a full pop is under 2 seconds, with AA's more like 10 seconds. It also easily mounts on a stand and is easily adjustable. You can find older used uantums for around ~$300ish with a turbo battery pack if you do some hunting. When I start rebuilding my portable lighting kit I'm going to try and find one of those this time round.

A metz 45 or 60 is also another good option for a powerful portable flash, but they are more fiddly to get working in manual mode depending on the model. The Metz 60 is pretty awesome for its output in a softbox or umbrella though.
