Sometimes we get caught up with making sure that our cameras capture the most accurate, true-to-life photos that we forget that a photograph can convey feelings and impressions without being so literal. I was on my hike in Yosemite Nat'l Park one morning, and I was struck by the quality of light that I saw streaming through the trees. No doubt Ansel Adams saw this quality many times. A regular photograph of this scene couldn't begin to compare with what I felt when I was actually there. To make this photo, I created a duplicate layer, added some gaussian blur, then used the screen blending mode. No, its not an accurate photo, but it does show you what I was seeing.

Wonderful ... dreamy ... I'd expect the elves from Lord of the Rings to materialize out of the trees. Well done!

This was taken at 8:34 am. The sun had just appeared a few minutes before (in a narrow, deep valley like Yosemite, it takes awhile for the sun to climb high enough to illuminate the valley floor).
