First Full Moon with my 5D Mark II

January's full moon was obscured by clouds so I finally had the chance to shoot the moon with the 5DM2 tonight.

Nice shot. I still have trouble with my 100-400 in terms of focus. At the infinity setting, moon is blurry, and manually I can get it to appear focused, but usually shot is quite blurry in spite of focusing attempts after reviewing it. Auto focus hunts too much. When you turn the focus ring to infinity, is moon focused with your lens?
Was this auto focus or manual?
Mirror lock up or not?

That was on autofocus since my eyesight isn't good enough to manually focus my shots. I tried it with my 2x but couldn't get anything good manually despite it looking focused to my eye. I noticed that autofocus is just short of infinity and then I went back to try to get the same spot manually and couldn't manage to make it sharp enough.

I did not use mirror lockup.

I still have trouble with my 100-400 in terms of focus.I try to focus carefully on the outer edge of the moon with my 100-400, mirror lock-up, 2 second shutter delay, and the shots seem to come out okay:

I had the 2X on it one nght, and AF did not work work well at all and manual was unreliable.
I'll give your technique a try.

Unfortunately AF does not work with a 2X so I rarely use mine any more.

AF wouldn't work on my 2x TC either, neither would it work with my telescope, until I taped over some of the connectors. Nice moon shots there.

Actually with the 5dmkII I found that using liveview to manually focus was a dream, just zoom in to 10x and you simply cant miss.
