I appreciate everyones input for my questions..... I have spent many hours on this forum looking through what everyones wrote in asked and what you all have replied to. I guess if I had just read a little bit before posting my first questions, I would have seen my question was already asked in so many words.. many times. :) Sorry..And Thanks!!!

I have been looking at the G6... The Pro1 and the Rebel... just trying to understand all the things these camera's come with that I might be looking for.

My 1st question... What does it mean "Body only" It says it doesn't come with a lens? Does that mean no lens at all or just a standard out of the factory lens? Sorry if that sounds like a stupid question.

My 2nd question....how comfortable would any of you be to buy "new used"?? I don't feel comfortable myself, but I don't know if there is a way the company knows how old the camera is and would cover it under warranty for so long??

"Body Only" means no lens . . . just the camera body. People buy them if they already have lenses. If you're going DSLR and want a "starter" lens, look for a Digital Rebel Kit. It comes with a lens that is good enough to help you learn.

I would buy used only from reputable dealers/people. People in this marketplace forum are reputable for the most part, and there is a feedback section for people you are not familiar with. Adorama is a reputable on-line warehouse for used equipment.

Good luck!

You are correct, "body only" means that the camera is sold with no lens. Before you can take any pictures you will also have to buy a lens and a compact flash card.

Cameras are sold this way because many of us already have the lenses we need and the last thing we would want is to have to pay for some kit lens we are never going to use.

If you are going to be serious about photography you are eventually going to want a DSLR because of the greater choice of lenses and lens quality availble. Also, the larger image sensor will enable bigger enlargements with less loss of quality.

The non-DSLR cameras have the advantage of more compact size. This is an advantage for carrying around.

Many people like to have a DSLR for most of their photography, but also a small camera they can carry in a pocket or purse when they don't want to bother carrying a separate camera bag.

I just went thru this same series of questions with a friend who thought he wanted a dSLR. (He saw the picture quality from my 300D and was amazed). He didn't want to learn all about photography but rather just wanted some really good family pictures. After some talking and explaining that a dSLR is not just a better Point and Shoot, and that the dSLR will NOT shoot video, and the dSLR preview screen on the back can NOT be used to frame the shot he bought a Canon Pro 1. It does all those things in addition to taking some pretty good stills. Turns out his financial investment was about the same since he bought a really good camera too. The G6 is, in my opinion, in the same class as the Pro 1 but neither allow interchangeable lenses like the 300D.
