View Full Version : PRINTING QUESTION...

Yesterday, while I was in the local wallet-diet shop, one of the salesmen showed me a picture that he'd printed. It was taken with a 3MP camera, and was an 11X14.

When I had my little 3.1MP P&S, I never would've dreamed of trying to print an 11X14, but this one didn't look too bad (close scrutiny would uncover some problems). But this got me thinking. With the 6.3 MP of the 300D, how large of a print can I get before I strat losing quality?

Thanks...

Hi Steve, uncropped I print 11x17's that look awsome and 13x19's that still look darn good hung on a wall and viewed a few feet back. I woud say that 13x19 is probably reaching the maximum limits of 6.3mp.

The original image may have come directly from a 3 MP camera, or it may have been worked over to get there. It may have been resampled intelligently and "coaxed" larger and better before it was printed.

For a 6 MP camera, I've found 13x19 to be about the largest that I can get to without extensive coaxing.

You need to remember that most people don't look at a photo as critically as a photog will. At art fairs--a friend of mine who gets a booth--says he can always spot the photog that come is because they are always sticking their nose on the prints looking for ink drops...

a 3 or 4MP will print fine at 20"x30". It won't be photographic quality when your eyes are 3 inches from the print - but that's not how an image that size is viewed. If you're 4 or 5 feet away from the image it'll look good.

Sort of like if you look at a large painting up close it hardly looks like anything.. you see brush marks and rather bad. Step back to where you can view the whole painting and it looks great.

13 X19 is the largest I've tried from my DRebel without re-sampling, and I think they look darn good. I think I could go a litte larger, but that is the largest sheet my printer will handle.
