Thanks...
Yeah, we were bummed to see the RSS covering the Orbiter. Wish they were launching as originally scheduled too!

A pretty spectacular ride, but the fact is, we need a better way to orbit and it's taking too long. I wish they'd hurry up. :)

According to our tour guide, the next gen launch system will fly (un-manned tests) in 2010 so they aren't too far away.
Big changes underway at both 39A and 39B with huge new lightning towers going up that are maybe slightly more than twice as tall as the Shuttle launch gantry. I've got other shots that show a couple of them at Pad 39B. Just don't have time right now to edit the ancillary stuff I shot.
The new system will clear the highest point of the VAB doors by about three feet vs the six feet at the top of the Saturn V and its tower.

That is a hell of a machine. I'll be sad to see it go.

Very cool. I have never been to the space center. I was at work when the Shuttle atop the 747 landed and took off here in Fort Worth at JRB oid Carswell AFB. Wish I could have gotten a few shots of it.

I saw that lashup in person once at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson many years ago but I was without camera that day. I guess DM was an alternate for El Paso?

I was a little surprised to see STS-119, when the previous mission was STS-126, but you are indeed (of course) correct. I wonder how the numbering works?

I missed a bit of what we were told but IIRC, they are actually backtracking on some of the mission numbers. Probably because the numbers were assigned to specific payload runs that have been flown out of order...
