Thanks, just downloaded and installed it.

I noticed that it forgot the preferences I had set in the previous version (1.5.0): I had to select Adobe RGB and my monitor profile again.

The download website doesn't work with Firefox, I had to start up Internet Explorer to access it (with Firefox, I get a strange error message with question marks in the popup window).

Hi Jesper,

I did not have any problems with Firefox, in fact it's downloading as I type. Do you have the latest version 1.0.2.?

If you are blocking pop-ups then you won't get to the downloads.

What is it? You guys seem excited by a new version, but I have no clue what the software even does. Anyone want to give me a pointer so I can decide if its worth having?

Thanks

The JPG thumbs look out of focus to me. Anyone else notice this? The raw images are sharp.
I have a Rebel 300D.

Here ya go:
Changes
*
1. Changes in Digital Photo Professional 1.6.1 from the previous Digital Photo Professional 1.5.0/1.6.0 are as follows:
*
(1-1) The Copy Stamp Tool (to adjust images by copying and pasting some part of the image) was added.
(1-2) The Rename Tool (to change multiple file names at once) was added.
(1-3) Lines appeared in the bottom of images converted from RAW images taken with the following models when using Digital Photo Professional 1.5.0/1.6.0 on a Macintosh with dual processors or Hyper-Threading Technology. This problem has now been fixed.
- EOS D60
- EOS 10D
- EOS Kiss Digital / EOS DIGITAL REBEL / EOS 300D DIGITAL
- EOS-1Ds Mark II
(1-4) Support was added for the EOS D60 and EOS Kiss Digital N / EOS DIGITAL REBEL XT / EOS 350D DIGITAL.
(1-5) The amount of time it takes for image thumbnails to appear has been reduced.
2. Changes from the Digital Photo Professionals 1.0.0 are as follows:
*
(2-1) An image-cropping tool was added.
(2-2) A simulation function for CMYK printing was added.
When you select a profile you want to use in your print in the [Preferences] dialog box, the image in Digital Photo Professional and the printed image will be displayed in colors based on the selected profiles. However, the profiles specified in this function will not be applied when Easy-Photo Print is used.
(2-3) It has become possible to transfer multiple images to any image-editing application with a single operation.
(2-4) In the main window Tree View Area, you can copy, locate, or delete the folders.
(2-5) In the RAW images adjustment tool palette, the tone curve has been changed to a log display.
(2-6) You can specify the printer profiles in [Color management] in the [Preferences] dialog box.
(2-7) When saving an image file, the image size can be specified in the [Save as] dialog box.
(2-8) When saving images in JPEG, you can specify the settings to embed the ICC profile in the image using the [Convert and save] dialog box.
(2-9) When saving images in TIFF, you can specify sharpness settings in the [Convert and save] dialog box.

Hmm, it doesn't mention a fix for the bizarre colour blotching on high iso images on the 20D.

I don't know how into this stuff you guys are but I've found the CS1 Pro software from Phase One to be the best image editing software for the Canon digital slr's.

You can even download a free thirty day trial.

Turned off pop up blockers. Went to the web site and did not see the DPS Ver 1.6.1 updater under the 20D download page. Only has download for Canon Digital Camera Software Developers Kit and the 20D firmware. The DPS version I have is V 1.1.02 when I got my two 20Ds in November, 2004. Are you referenceing for a different camera?

I used to use C1 Pro when I had a 300D, but they took forever for 20D support so I switched to PS CS Camera Raw and was very impressed.
I tried to go back to C1 Pro after using PS CS for my 20D raw conversions.
The image quality on C1 Pro left something to be desired. The skin colours were rather greenish (as others have noted), and the PS CS raw images had slightly less noise with equal detail.
I also find the workflow in PS CS to suit my needs MUCH better since images I edit in C1 Pro always need to be tweaked later in PS CS anyway.

But, DPP is a great free option, other than that huge color blotching bug and the slightly less noticable "fringing" bug that plagued atleast the first 2 releases.

Yes, I have Firefox 1.0.2. When the popup dialog opens, it just contains a strange message:

CZ01005CRE:???

and a button with three question marks. But it doesn't matter I've already downloaded and installed it with Internet Explorer.

Does anyone know what the main advantages are of DPP 1.6.1 over EOS Viewer Utility 1.2.1.14? It would also be great to know what I'm missing out on by using EVU to convert my RAW images to jpegs to be edited in PS.

I typically only use digital exposure compensation and fix white balance problems in EVU then do everything else in PS. I seem to like saturation and contrast set to neutral, so in PS i mainly only add USM.

EVU is discontinued. Canon has gone back to Zoombrowser EX and DPP.

Hmm, this is news to me, Scott (assuming you weren't referring to FVU). Where did you hear about it? Just curious as I use EVU instead of DPP for most of my raw conversions.

Thanks, Scott. I use EVU over DPP for the same reasons these guys do. It'll be interesting to see how Canon develops DPP over the next couple of releases.

Yup, I heard that. However, I never could find a use for DPP (or ZoomBrowser) and use the copy of EVU that came with my 20D.

I keep opening up the two applications thinking I must be missing something, that I just don't understand their capabilities ... but can never see what the advantage is over using EVU.

Has anyone published a list of advantages/disadvantages of EVU, DPP and Zoombrowser? Should I be dumping EVU and using something else ... or be using EVU in conjunction with DPP in some way?

Bob

hahah... The only use of EVU I have is the ability for me to copy the RAW files from the camera to the PC. Since I'm too lazy to go get a reader. Does the other program have access to the PFunc on the 1 Series??

By "the other program" are you referring to DPP? If so, I don't think so since I didn't find it documented in the DPP manual and I couldn't find a "Camera Settings" drop down menu when I looked for in in DPP. So, if they're going to get rid of EVU, obviously they'll have to enhance DPP with that function or come out with another program that provides that function.

Or maybe they're going to only have EVU support the 1D series cameras.

Hey, If your trying to figure out how to use this new software, there is a really good tutoral at this link:
http://www.photoworkshop.com/canon/dpp/index.html .
Actually after playing with this software, I kind of like it, My feeling is that it may be realy good for someone who uses PS 3.0 because it has alot of the bells and whistles that are missing in that software. In particular, how it allows you to customize the browser/ raw settings and such. I know alot of you will say, "Well it's not a PS supported product" this is true and you will have to export your files. But, I still like the different ways that you can use it and it is very customizable. That said, just check out the tutoral and see.
