I had just a few hours to drive to the pacific ocean. The weather was not fine but I wanted to capture this rock.

That's quite a rock, I can see why you wanted it. Nice shot, Ernst.

It was taken in San Mateo County. South of Half Moon Bay, near the junction of Hwy 1 and Hwy 84.

that is beautiful Ernst

sighting the people on the left gives a great perspective to that massive bulk of rock

is the sea coming and going from both sides of where the rock is standing ?
is it on an island ? *
it does not sound like it when you describe where you took it from
the sky scene on the left seems to have darker clouds (you say it was not a good day as regards weather)
they add to the shot a lot

the right side is a lot paler, both the small piece of sea which we can see and the sky
but that can happen with distances anyway
especially as the rock is so large
it's certainly a giant

the rocks seem to go a long way back there also Ernst

* a peninsula maybe ?

Fantastic panoramic Ernst, just had a look at the full size image on your pbase site the inclusion of people on both sides gives it wonderful scale, what pano stitching programme do you use? Quadphoto

No it's not an island - even not a penisula. It's more or less a straight line beach. But stitching together several shots - 10 portait format shots to cover the height of the rock - giving a 180 degree view makes it appear almost like a peninsula. The left end of the picture is looking north, the right end is looking south. It's about an hour's drive south of San Francisco.

I used the Conon Photostitch program to fit the ten shots together. I did not use a tripod.

Wow! I cant beleive you didn't use a tripod.. I find it hard to line panos up without using one. good job

Yes, I know, sometimes I also mess up and the software can not stitch my shots together in a good way because I was not careful enough. But about 90% of the panoramas I have on pbase were done without tripod. I not even use the sitch-assist mode of the camera. I use manual (M) mode.

Awesome shot! The stitched pano from a G2 probably beats a crop from a 1Ds. Great job.
