Hello,

first of all I am new to DSLR photography, although I have done much photography with other Digital and 35mm SLR cameras.

I have 750-950 dollars Canadian, and I'm looking for a good Digital SLR for Aviation Spotting (Plane Spotting) Landscapes and Scenery!

Any help would be much apreciated!

well your budget is quite tight...
You could go for a used 10D, or a Digital Rebel (even cheaper). Both of them great cameras, the 10D is a little more capable

Elan 7NE is a film not digital. Canon Digital choices are Rebel (300 & 350), 10D, 20D, and then there are the ones extreamly above you buget

I myself have just received my first DSLR (Rebel XT or 350) depending upon where you live. I must say that it is a great camera but I will still be using my S1IS for its own versitly when it comes to distance shots. I don't have to carry around multiple lenses and is quite light. If you are doing anything such as aerail shots (distand and wideness Plus photostich I believe) why not try to work with a High quality point and shoot like the Pro 1?

The 300D is a fine camera and will probably make you happy. There are software hacks available to access additional features such as FEC and MLU (flash exposure compensation & mirror lockup).

I have owned one for over a year and really like it; this is a second body along with my 20D.

The 10D is also nice, I had one before the 20D, nice build and more advanced features, but the same chip.

Either will get you into DSLR photography at a reasonable price.

If this is the one in your price range, get it. I have mine and it is quite good. I have a lot of learning to do before the sucessor to the 20D comes out - which I will upgrade to when that happens.

You'll be happy, although now your going to be fixated on getting longer and faster glass............. ;>)

Oh well, that is the price of our addiciton.

Let me know if you want any information on the Wasia or UnDutchable hacks after you settle in with your new baby.

The Canon EOS Elan 7NE is a very nice "film" camera.
I own a 7NE and enjoy using it but I use my digital Canon EOS 10D for about 98% of what I like to shoot.

As mentioned ... a used 10D or 300D with a couple lenses would be a very wise choice (if you can find one)

An 18-55 for plane spotting?

You might as well buy a $50 1.3MP camera and take photos of planes with that, either way all you will get is a blue sky with a black dot in it :D

Seriously, you need LONG glass - much longer than 55mm.

Hi Calgaryphotographer,

With a really limited budget you might have to get something ike a Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 USM. I have no idea what the sharpness is like with this lens ... and there may be some non-Canon equivalents in the same price range that are better. But it has a lot more reach than the 18-55 and is about as inexpensive as you can get for a zoom in its category (~210 US).

Note however that 55mm with the 1.6 magnification factor may not be wide enough for you if you want to do landscapes, so I'm not sure if you are going to be able to meet all of your needs with a single lens.

A new 300D body from a local store such as McBains in Edmonton is $908 Cdn (incl GST) and the 55-200 from B&H will cost about $330 Cdn (incl GST + shipping), for a total of $1238. This is above what you wanted to spend, so I'm not sure how you are going to keep within your budget unless you manage to find some used equipment in good shape at a reasonable price.

An alternative you could consider if you don't need a long lens very often is to get the camera with the kit lens ... or even the nifty fifty (50mm f1.8) and rent a long lens from your local camera shop for the days you need it. A new 300D with the 18-55mm costs $1068.93 (after GST) from McBains ... or about $1010 Cdn after shipping and GST if you buy it from B&H in the States. Still over your limit of $950 Cdn, but $200 closer.

Does anyone know if Canon sells reconditioned DSLR's in Canada? Personally if it were me I'd rather get a reconditioned one from the manufacturer than buy used from eBay if the price is about the same. Also, some of the better camera shops carry a lot of used equipment.

Bob

Come join us on the dark side, the great Canon will own your soul......and wallet.

Seriously, you have to start somewhere, so take it one step at a time.

For me, going digital totally renewed my interest in photography after many years of only hauling the camera equipment out for holidays and family events.

Buy a 20D or Rebel XT (or a good used 10D) .. if you get the Rebel you'll soon find the price dropping as it gets completely phased out.

If your budget is really tight but you want to shoot planes, possibly look into the Tamron 200-400 f5.6. You can get a used one on ebay for $150-$200 (USD) and though it's not a highly rated lens, it's a start...

Used 10D is the way to go IMHO, it is more robust than the 300D, a lot heavier and better built... 10D & 20D are Prosumer cameras while th 300d & 350D are consumer cameras... They are all capable of producing great quality images but the 10 & 20 are sturdier and can stand rougher treatment because of the metal body and lens mount...

A friend of mine was using EOS 10D and canon 75-300 and Jessop 2x adaptor for aviation photography. he posted some of his photos on the web and sold them to a magazine for a couple of issues - personal would recommend a 10D to either 100-300 or the 75-300 both are good lenses.

Take a look at the 28-135mm IS 3.5-5.6. It has a variety of focal length that could work, has image stab which you will need and it pretty sharp. That 18-55 is a waste of money, even if the focal length would work. The 28-300mm IS L lens is sick! And really really expensive too.

I had the 28-135 IS but found it lacked contrast in less than ideal lighting conditions and it crept while carrying, maybe I just got a rogue one...
