I've noticed some bits of muck on the viewfinder, it may be on the mirror, or on the screen, or elsewhere
Looks like tiny bits of fluff or material of some sort
What's the best way to find out hwerre it is sitting and how to SAFELY remove?
thanks :(

Try removing the lens and blowing the mirror with an air blower. I've recently purchased a Giottos Rocket-Air Blower. It's supposed to be the safest thing to use to remove dust. It'll probably run you about $10 - $12.

You too! My week old EOS 350D has a tiny flake of black on the inside of the viewfinder. It has no affect on my photos but It is a bit annoying. I'd be interested to see what is recommended.
I got a wide range of recommendations on my own recent post on the matter:

I went and got the EF 50mm F1.8 II to make me feel better - It did :)
Good luck - and be careful in there!

It won't be on the mirror.. The eyepiece won't focus on dust on the mirror or on the lens elements.
It will most likely be on the ground glass plate that has the focus squares etched on it. If you remove the lens and look up to the top of the camera, you'll see it. The mirror reflects light onto this ground glass plate
Blow it off with a blower.. If you try brush it, you'll probably make it worse :)
