i heard from some other forums that the rebel xt isn't good enough to do justice to higher quality lenses. i was told to get a 20D instead.

if i had to buy lenses for the xt, i was told not to highly consider L glass.

being somewhat new to SLRs, lenses and photography, is this true to some degree? i own a xt and will eventually look for a new lens. thanks for the advice.

No, whoever told you that is not knowledgeable. The lens is probably the most important element of a camera...probably more so than the imaging sensor. Putting L glass on a digital rebel XT will provide equivalent quality output of using it on a more expensive camera. A shot taken with the XT with L glass will equal a shot taken with the 20D with L glass, with all other factors being equal.

good to know. thanks for the clarification. so image quality wise, the lens matters more than the sensor? how important is the sensor?

The sensor is important, but the Canon sensors are all good. I second pradeep1's comment. The use of the best lens you can afford is a good way to go when looking for better image quality.. The sensor for the XT is superior to many out there. It is true that the L lens provide a full frame image to the sensor, and the sensor can not see the outside edges of that. This explanation is not technically correct but will sufice for practical purposes. (that is true for the 20D,1DM2 also) The part that the sensor does see is used to good advantage and one can see the difference in the pictures you take when using better lens.

Whoever you talked to Reemas is a complete idiot. The XT can take advantage of ANY lens in the EOS line.

Hey Reemas,

Post a link to that thread where this person told you that. I am sure we can get a few more laughs out of them. :p

XT and 20D have the highest pixel density of eos lineup

DP Review is well known for there "knowledgable" contingency ;)

The differneces between the 350DRebelXT and the 20D have everything to do with speed and handling, functions, and settings,..

...they have very very little to do with the quality of image that comes out of them. :)

Hi CDS,

There has been no full technical review of the XT yet. Sites like Steve's and DP has only previews. Believe that for these sites to evaluate the camera (at times it takes one or two months), it cannot just be the lens and camera functions alone.

The XT has a brand new sensor and like all sensors, they need to be analysed whether they are similiar or identical in performance to the type in 20D and others.
My thoughts are that the sensors in a camera are important too. The accuracy of image duplication, sensitivity and reflection are part of the sensor function...is it not?
