Epson P-2000 video converter

Hoping this is the right forum for this...........

I bought the Epson P-2000 and think it is great, it lives up to and exceeds all my expectations.

Of course, now I want to play with all the incidental features, like playing movies.

What software (free or cheap) out there is suitable for converting DVD or other types of video for use on the Epson? I see it will play AVI, DIVX, MPEG2 and some others, but when I do a Google seach, there is an avalanch of information and they are all $$$ programs.

Before I pay out, I want to make sure I am buying software that will do what I want, so I am posing the question: Has anyone out there had experience with this?

This gets you to a tool called PocketDivXEncoder which is free. Not sure if it will do DVDs but it certainly converts MPEGs and AVIs I have into a nice smooth running vids for the P-2000.

I don't use it very much, but like you, I had to at least make it did work. :)

Bruce - it wont play plain AVIs, DVIXs or MPEG2s. They have to be MPEG4s.

At the moment I am using Quicktime Pro on AVIs I shot on Fuji S602. The quality is pretty crappy though.

I then tried converting a AVI (I had shot with my proper camcorder), that I had edited in Pinnacle Studio 8. Better picture quality but no sound.

So I still need to do more work to find the best way to convert AVIs, but it's a start at least.

Let me know if you find a better way.

Divx does work with the Epson; I stumbled across Dr. Divx on the company home page and downloaded a 15 day trial version. Ian has also posted a link to a freeware program that works.

I was able to rip a DVD (you have to copy it to your hard drive first).

It plays on the Epson, video is good but there is a problem with sound synch.

This is a a lot of work and time for mediocre results.

Let me put it this way, the P-2000 is excellent as a photo storage device.............

My apologies (must have read the manual incorrectly).

I'll get some software and give it a go. The sound sync problem is also there when using QuickTime Pro.

And yes I agree it's an excellent device for storing photos and for downloading "in the field". Shame the software is so lousy.

But I still love it.

it plays divx, xvid, 3vix, and microsoft mpeg4 (and any other mp4 based codec). it's best to code the minimum video data rate over 1000 - although i believe this is better now with the new firmware...

Makes feel a right pillock for not reading the manual properly. LOL

At least I can try some different software to see what works best.

No sign of the newer firmware on the UK website (please prove me wrong someone)!!!

I downloaded the one from the USA site, but it upgraded it to the same 1.1 version I already had. I tried it twice follwoing the instructions to the letter.

A Pillock is an Idiot.

Pillock is such a great work as you can get so much more empasis on the word when you say it to someone (even yourself)!!
