Just curious

Who here, on this site, is actually a professional photographer.. when i say that, i mean, relying on your photos to support yourself... just photography, nothing else

Or just a hobbyist?

Or a hobbyist tying to hit pro?

For me it's a hobby, and I still have to follow the learning curve, although I will utilize it to make money, maybe not directly, but as a tool for me, because I intend to go in to the media technology field. Then I'll see if I want to take it further.

Rather than doing this again try the "what's your real occupation" thread.

Strictly hobby.

Would never try to be pro as its ones of my escapes from work, rather than the stress of worrying if I can make a living from it (I know i'm not good enough ;))

Well, I am not employed by anyone other than myself, however; my husband does work and that allows me to be an aspiring pro.

I'd have to work really really hard to make enough at photography to not work full time anymore. I like part time pro, I don't shoot anything for free unless it's my family.

Somewhere in-between.

I took an early retirement four years ago from my "real" job, just before I turned 53.

Nowdays, I supplement my retirement by freelancing for a few newspapers.

Best of both worlds....I'm a professional hobbyist:cool:

Jk, I suck, and I'm still learning, strictly a hobby :)

Both. I started here years ago with a 10D and then upgraded so much, I had to go pro. :) I shoot for everything locally I can, and I travel to shoot. I shoot for free, making very little that way, but loving it. If I did go pro for money, I'd probably hate it. Passion drives me, not money.

I'm a high school student and I don't work so a hobby, but who know what will happen in the future?

Commercial, advertising, environmental portraits, exec portraits. I've been working as a photographer full time since graduating in 1986 with a B/A in photography.

Have taught advanced portraiture at a local college part time and worked for 10 years as the staff photographer at a hospital and now specialize in health care related photography.

I still do personal work and I was in a group show with 20 other photographers last November. So I work professionally full time and still do my own personal work.

I am a Director of Operations for a Commercial Trade Printing Company in Southern California by day, and when I am not in the office I am at many of our local tracks snapping away at my fellow friends and fellow competitor Go Karters. I recently have had an opportunity arise for this years Formula Drift events to take pics of drifters and cover the event for a small wage. I am just glad to be in this position, it is more the passion then the pursuit of money. Maybe one day, but for now, it is just a hobby.

Working pro, full time, pays the rent. Mostly commercial work such as catalogs, products, and people. I work mostly for corporate (65%), with the remainder being editorial and advertising.

Semi-Pro. I shoot 8-10 weddings a year plus other events and portraits, but not nearly enough to live on. I do hope to retire in another 6 years or so (if the market will only cooperate) at which time I would like to grow the business into something more.
