I read of a new budget model being unveiled on Feb 17th,
an upgrade/replacement to the 450d.
If so where can it be priced at,higher than the 450d or reduce the 450d price which seems unlikely given the world economy?

I heard there will be a new 1000D with swivel screen, fast liveview and video coming this year. With Canon's new live view AF patent announced today, that may be what is released at PMA. Sounds like the ultimate budget/consumer SLR.

I really can't think what they could add to a new 450D besides video. It already slaughters everything in its class spec wise. I guess they could go digic 4 and 15 MP, but really who would pay extra for that? I doubt they would increase fps or AF system because then what is the point of the 50D?

Canon said over a year ago the xxxxD and xxxDs would get upgraded at the same time. Chances are, there'll be an announcement on a 1500D and 500D very soon.

As for the 500D, they'll likely put 15MP, HD video, DIGIC IV and a slightly better AF. Alot of people will buy that.

When the 450D was announced, the specs sheet was surprisingly close to a 40D. Many questioned 'why buy a 40D?' Well, you'd still buy it for the usual reasons - even better AF, higher fps, better handling ergonomics, build, viewfinder etc. It'll be the same for the 500D vs. 50D. Except for the HD movie mode.. that'll be a big plus for the 500D crowd.

I guess you are right. And if the next xxD has what the rumours say (13pt AF, 8fps, weather sealing) then there will still be a big class separation.

I still wonder about the logic for maintaining two rebel lines. Looks like they mopped up on sales over Christmas though, so what do I know....
