I have a couple weeks off and would really like to get some winterscape pics of either Yellowstone or Yosemite NP. I see most of the roads are closed and am wondering how one goes about photography these places in the winter!!

Any info on workshops, fieldtrips through the end of March would be great also!!

I am going to be working in Yellowstone beginning in April so I have been browsing their website for information, and I believe to reach the areas not plowed you have a couple options. Snowcoach tours, snowmobiles (led by a guide), or skiing/snowshoeing.

My first winter trip to Yosemite was with Gary Hart: http://www.garyhartphotography.com/PhotographCalifornia.shtml

I'm now sold on Yosemite in winter. I went to Yosemite last weekend, but didn't have as much snow as I wanted, so I will return when it snows more. Traveling in the valley is not much of a problem and there is a lot to see. Getting to the high country is just not allowed during the winter season.

You may find some interesting information (including live webcams) at: http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/conditions.htm

If you decide to go to Yosemite or need more information, let me know, and if I can help, I will.

The northern part of Yellowstone is plowed in the winter (Gardiner to Cooke City). this is the spot with the famous "arch". It's also a great wildlife spot. Otherwise you need to take a guided snowcoach or snowmobile tour.

Ditto. You can rent snowmobile and everything for about $200/day give or take. Call around and check out prices, but that is the way to go. I want to do this before winter is over!

I just took a trip to Yosemite this past weekend. The valley was open with no chain restrictions, although to get wide-sweeping shots of the backcountry, you will probably have to do some snowshoeing. I parked at the Badger Pass ski area and snowshoed the 10.5 miles to Glacier Point. It was a pretty grueling journey (especially the return trip) and I would advise that you plan 2 days for the trip. did it in 1, and my body paid for it the next day.
