View Full Version : Are Lenspen sensor cleaners any good?

I saw a Lenspen sensor cleaner at a local photo store for $25 today. That's a helluva lot cheaper than most sensor cleaners I see.
I don't change lenses often (because of dust concerns I have 3 bodies)...so I wouldn't need to use it often, in fact if it worked well ONCE, that will be pretty good for me.
Anyways...I'm worried that since it's just a felt tip it'll scratch the sensor when you wipe the sensor with it.
Is anyone using this product? Yay or nay?
thanks :)

I have a SensorKlear or something like that (probably the same one you are asking about). I've had my 40D now since Sep '07, used it pretty much every day, change lenses all the time, outside, beach, rain, snow, etc. I've cleaned my sensor once using the SensorKlear thing and it worked very well.
Make sure you own a Rocket Blower, I do use that on my gear (sensor included) about once a month or so.

I bought one of these when I still used my 20D and, the few times I needed it, it worked very well. But I always used it after a good blast with a rocket blower.
Since switching to the 40D, then 50D, I've not needed it at all. The automatic sensor cleaning and an occaisional rocket blast have kept them both clean.

I use the SensorKlear, think I got it on Amazon for like $10 or something. A great little tool and I use it without worry. Haven't had to wet swab yet on my MkIIn. I believe Canon tech's use it as well.

thanks for all the replies! I already have a rocket blower, but that one can only do so much...I shoot quite a bit at high apertures and I'm sick and tired of the stupid dots...I saw one locally for $25, which seemed a little steep, but I'll keep checking...if I don't find anything cheaper I'm gonna grab that and attack all of my bodies tomorrow :)

I've used the SensorKlear on my sensor with pretty good results.

Where on earth can these be bought in Canada? I can't find them anywhere local.

I've used the SensorKlear since it was introduced...quick, easy and effective. I've needed nothing in the line of cleaning supplies beyond the SensorKlear and a rocket blower in over 3 years.
Buy them from B&H or direct from the manufacturer. http://www.lenspen.com/402

thanks for all the responses! I guess it's a pretty inexpensive alternative to sensor swabs and the like :)
Vascilli: London Drugs has them for 25 bucks :)

It's what Canon uses to clean sensors. Good enough recommendation for me!

It's one of the things Canon use to clean sensors...
I use one on my 5D, have needed to use it twice when the rocket blower wasn't good enough (the full SensorKlear pen thingy kit comes with a blower too). I'd happily recommend it, it worked really well, though I have recently used it on a friend's 10D that has never been cleaned since purchase and it struggled with the junk on that. But then again, I think anything this side of a wet swab and suction would...

I had a hard time finding a SensorKlear in a store and looked all over Michigan while traveling. I ended up buying the $20.00 kit from Photographic Solutions with 4 swabs, Pec-pads and some Eclipse Or E2 solution. Nice wet clean kit for the price.
I then placed an order (new 40D Kit!) with Adorama and added one of these pens to it. I used that on my old 10D that had never been cleaned (and had spots showing up in photos) and it worked great! No perfect! I never even used the wet kit I puchased a few days before.
The PhotoSol kit comes in a nice zip pouch and the SensorKlear pen fits in perfectly as well so now I have two options for cleaning but will always use the pen after rocket blowing before I try anything else.
Buy one!

I'm curious, what else does Canon use?

Ive just done my sensor with a lenspen sensorklear pro kit..
after taking some nice blue sky photos at f22 the amount of dust when i zoomed in to about 100% was incredible.im almost sure a tractor had drove across my sensor!!
so anyway here arrives the sensor pen after 2 goes the difference was amazing it really does work GO BUY ONE.
the only down side i found was that i still have a few dark spots of dust in all the 4 corners which is prob down to me not doing it correctly!!
im going to try the wet sensor swab method next see if this can get into the corners better(fingers crossed i dont destroy the sensor)....

Fof what it's worth, I use a standard lenspen to clean my 20D's sensor and that seems fine. Caveats:
1) I don't use the same pen for lenses and the sensor!
2) It's only a 20D... not sure I would do it with a really expensive camera!
