When the going gets tough the tough gets going,so I was finding it pretty hard to focus with my 100mm macro,so I decided to make it tougher figured if you could get the hardest part down first then everything should be easier,so I tried a shot with a 36mm extension tube attached to the 100mm macro, but since I dont have a cable release I used the two second shutter delay, and surprisingly it came out reasonable, not like the ones the pros post here, but reasonable for a beginner like myself.
C and C appreciated.
By the way can someone Id this for me,I would really like to know the names of the insects I shoot.

Hi Sharon, hand held focusing for 1:1 or higher requires a lot of practice, and a steady subject. By coincidence I just happened to come across one of those little fellows and snapped a couple of shots. I think they belong to the Metallic Fly - Orthonevra family but not too sure since my investigation was only based on similar pictures found on the net. I was able to get him to climb on the eraser of a wood pencil and stayed there during the shoot. Don't ask me how I did it, it was just luck:).

That is a really nice shot of that Metallic Fly. Shooting hand held is a lot of work. If you do it all the time then its no big deal but I have noticed here lately that the tripod or monopod is used way more. Did use my 430 EX II flash when doing macro and did notice a big difference! i am wanting a new lens but have to chose between the 85mm or the 100mm (portrait vs macro lens which to chose).

not too bad Sharon, if you used the timer was camera on tripod also?
its easier to shoot a couple frames quickly and have better chance of getting one with the focus where you want it, especially if you cannot brace arm/elbow against something!

First, nice shot Sharon.
Photographergirl the 100mm is a portrait lens too. A very nice one I might add. Hope this helps you on your decision.
